Da Nang is the modern coastal city wedged between Hué and Hoi An — the gateway to central Vietnam, with a long stretch of My Khe beach, a riverside skyline, and a handful of set-piece attractions. The Hai Van Pass that drops down from the north is one of Southeast Asia’s great motorbike rides; inland, the Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills sits cradled by two giant stone hands above the cloud line; the Marble Mountains rise straight out of the suburbs, hollowed with cave temples and Buddha shrines; and on weekend nights the steel Dragon Bridge over the Han River breathes fire from its mouth. Most travellers stay one or two nights and use Da Nang as the launch point for Hoi An, Hué, and the My Son ruins.
