Hai Van Pass Road Trip in Da Nang

The Hai Van Pass — the "pass of ocean clouds" — climbs out of Da Nang's bay on 21 kilometres of hairpins with the sea falling away below, and it earned its fame honestly: this was the dramatic natural border between old kingdoms, a fortified chokepoint through every modern war, and, since a certain television episode, the most requested motorbike ride in Vietnam.
The Ride
Since the road tunnel took the trucks, the old pass belongs to scooters, bicycles and photo-stop convoys. Ride north out of the city past Nam O, sweep up through the bends to the summit gate, then drop to the Lang Co lagoon side for seafood with your feet nearly in the water. Half a day return, or continue on to Hue.
History at the Top
The summit is crowned by the Hai Van Quan gate — a 19th-century fortification later studded with French and American-era bunkers, now restored as a proper historic site. It's the natural leg-stretch stop; clouds really do pour over the saddle some afternoons, so a clear morning gives the best sea views. No bike? Jeep tours, cars and even the coastal railway trace the same scenery.
