A Ministry of Public Health community hospital serving Thalang district, which covers the whole northern third of Phuket including the airport, Bang Tao and Laguna, Surin, Nai Yang and Mai Khao. About 90 beds, outpatient clinics and an emergency room, on the main road through Thalang town, about fifteen minutes from the airport terminal.
What it is known for
Being the hospital at the airport end of the island. Thalang Hospital has grown from a rural health station opened in 1938 into a community hospital of about 90 beds: district-hospital status in 1978, a move to the present site in 1987 and a 60-bed inpatient block in the late 1990s. It has outpatient clinics, an emergency room, a delivery suite, operating theatres, X-ray and a CT scanner, and serves the northern third of Phuket — the airport, Mai Khao, Nai Yang, Surin, Bang Tao and Laguna. Serious cases go to Vachira in town, forty minutes south, or to the private hospitals for those with insurance.
Who it suits
Anyone hurt or taken ill near the airport or at the northern beaches who needs the closest emergency room, budget travellers in Thalang, Nai Yang or Bang Tao with a minor illness or injury, and Thai-speaking residents. It is a public community hospital: Thai-first, sometimes crowded, limited English. For an insured visitor at the Laguna resorts with anything more than a minor problem, the private hospitals in town are forty minutes away and usually the better call; the resorts themselves will often arrange the car.
Cost and insurance
Public pricing, and the cheapest care in the north of the island: a consultation, tests and medicine cost a fraction of a private bill, and an admission is affordable. Pay at the cashier in cash or by card; expect to pay and claim rather than direct billing, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before leaving, which may take a little longer here than in town. Thai social security and the universal coverage scheme are handled here for residents.
Getting there
On Thepkasattri Road, the main north-south highway, in Thalang town centre beside the Lotus’s supermarket and behind Thalang Phranangsang School — about fifteen minutes from the airport terminal, fifteen from Bang Tao and Laguna, twenty from Surin and forty from Phuket Town.
