Run by the Ministry of Public Health for Kathu district, Patong Hospital sits on Sai Nam Yen Road about a kilometre inland from the beach. It is a 90-bed community hospital rather than a big general one, but it is the emergency room closest to Patong’s hotels, bars and scooter traffic, and it stabilises and refers on what it cannot treat.
What it is known for
Being close. Patong Hospital is the public hospital for the island’s busiest resort, and its emergency room has seen every kind of holiday injury there is: scooter crashes on the hill road, falls, cuts, food poisoning, jellyfish stings and the fights and tumbles of Bangla Road at three in the morning. It is a community hospital of about 90 beds with outpatient clinics and an emergency room that runs around the clock; serious cases are stabilised and sent to Vachira in town or, for the insured, to the private hospitals. It is usually the hospital a 1669 ambulance will bring you to from anywhere in Patong, which is worth knowing before you need it.
Who it suits
Budget travellers with a minor illness or injury who are staying in Patong, anyone hurt in Patong at night who needs the closest emergency room, and Thai-speaking residents of the west coast. Service is Thai-first and waits in the outpatient clinics can be long; the emergency room is faster and well used to foreigners. For anything complex you will be transferred, so if you have insurance and time, go straight over the hill to one of the private hospitals instead and save yourself the second journey.
Cost and insurance
Public pricing — a consultation, basic tests and medicine typically cost less than a night in a mid-range Patong hotel, and an overnight admission is still affordable. Pay at the cashier. Documents come in Thai unless you ask, so request an English medical certificate and an itemised receipt if you intend to claim on insurance. Direct billing is not something to expect here, and most insurers will want to move an insured patient to a private hospital anyway once they are stable.
Getting there
Sai Nam Yen Road runs inland from Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road; the hospital is about a kilometre from the beach, a few minutes by tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi from Bangla Road and walkable from the hotels at the northern end of Patong.
