Opened in 1982 as Siriroj Hospital and long known to foreigners as Phuket International Hospital, this became Bangkok Hospital Siriroj in 2019 after joining the BDMS group. It is a full private hospital on the bypass road near Central Phuket with a 24-hour emergency room, an intensive-care unit and more than 30 specialties, and it hosts the SSS Network’s multiplace recompression chamber, which is why the Andaman dive industry keeps its number to hand.
What it is known for
The chamber, and a long history with foreigners. Bangkok Hospital Siriroj is Phuket’s oldest private hospital, opened in 1982, and for decades was the one expats and dive operators meant by ‘Phuket International’. It joined BDMS in 2014 and took its present name in September 2019. The SSS Network’s recompression chamber has operated here since 1996: a multiplace unit taking up to four people including an attendant, staffed around the clock and serving divers from the whole Andaman coast, from the Similans to the Malaysian border. Around it sits a general private hospital with a 24-hour emergency room, an intensive-care unit and clinics across more than 30 specialties, with JCI accreditation according to its website.
Who it suits
Divers, first of all — anyone with decompression symptoms after a dive should be heading here, or calling the chamber’s 24-hour line, +66 81 081 9000, before anything else. Beyond that it suits insured visitors staying in the south and east of the island — Chalong, Rawai, Cape Panwa, Kata and Karon are all closer to the bypass road than to Phuket Town — and long-stay residents who want private care a step below the flagship’s prices. Complex cases beyond its scope go up the road to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, and the two share doctors and records.
Cost and insurance
Top-tier private pricing, generally a little below Bangkok Hospital Phuket for the same treatment, though not by much. Direct billing depends on your insurer having a contract with BDMS; otherwise it is a deposit on admission and pay-and-claim. A chamber treatment is expensive and takes hours, and it is dive insurance — DAN or a travel policy that specifically covers diving — that pays for it; many general policies exclude diving below a stated depth or without certification. Get the estimate in writing before treatment starts, and keep the discharge summary.
Getting there
On Chalermprakiat Ror 9 Road, the bypass that runs down the east side of the island, just south of Central Phuket and about ten minutes from Phuket Town. Chalong is fifteen minutes away, Kata and Karon about thirty, Patong thirty to forty, the airport about forty-five. Grab and Bolt both come here; from the piers at Chalong and Rassada the hospital’s own ambulance will meet a boat if you call ahead.
