If money is not the first question, this is where most visitors end up: a large private hospital on Hongyok Utis Road at the northern edge of Phuket Town, part of the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services group, with a 24-hour emergency room, an international patient centre, specialist centres for heart, orthopaedics, cancer and children, and a diving medicine centre with its own hyperbaric chamber.
What it is known for
The widest specialist cover on the island. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is the BDMS group’s flagship for the Andaman coast, with about 266 registered beds, dedicated centres for heart, orthopaedics and trauma, cancer, women’s and children’s health, eyes, dentistry and rehabilitation, and a 24-hour emergency room with its own ambulance fleet; the group’s 1719 line also arranges transfers by road, sea and air. Its website states both JCI and Thai HA accreditation. For divers it matters that the hospital runs a diving medicine centre with a monoplace hyperbaric chamber on its fifth floor, open in the daytime; the island’s 24-hour multiplace chamber is at its sister hospital, Siriroj, ten minutes away.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone with a serious illness or injury, and anyone who wants to be treated in their own language without waiting. The international patient centre handles insurance coordination, interpreters and the paperwork that embassies and insurers ask for afterwards. Families use it for the children’s centre; long-stay residents and yacht crews use it for everything from check-ups to surgery. It is also where the smaller hospitals on the island, and the clinics on Phi Phi and in Khao Lak, transfer the cases they cannot handle, so it is worth knowing the name even if you never plan to use it.
Cost and insurance
The most expensive hospital in Phuket, and priced like the Bangkok flagships. Cashless direct billing is available only to insurers the hospital has a contract with; anyone else pays up front or leaves a deposit on admission, so ring your insurer’s assistance line before you go if the situation allows. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep every receipt and the discharge summary — both are needed for a claim. A private ambulance or a boat transfer from an island is billed separately, and neither is cheap; agree it with your insurer first if you can.
Getting there
On Hongyok Utis Road at the northern edge of Phuket Town, a few minutes from the Old Town, about thirty minutes from Patong over the hill through Kathu and forty-five from the airport down Thepkasattri Road. Grab and Bolt both come here, and every taxi driver on the island knows it. In an emergency call the hospital’s own line on +66 76 254 425 (or 1719 from a Thai phone) rather than driving yourself — the road in from Patong is slow in the evening, and the ambulance crew can start treatment on the way.
