The south of the island had no hospital of its own until Chalong Hospital grew out of the local health centre: a 24-hour accident and emergency unit from late 2015, community-hospital status a few years later and a formal opening by the health minister in January 2024. Officially 30 beds and in practice running nearer 50, it serves the 54,000 residents of Chalong, Rawai and Karon and the visitors on their beaches, and it is a short drive from the pier where the Phi Phi and Racha boats come in.
What it is known for
Filling a gap. Until recently anyone hurt in Kata, Karon, Rawai or Chalong faced a half-hour drive to a hospital; Chalong Hospital now sits on Chao Fa West Road by the Chalong circle, almost opposite HomePro, with a 24-hour accident and emergency department, general outpatient clinics, physiotherapy, a dental clinic and the usual public-health work. It is registered as a 30-bed community hospital and, according to the health ministry, actually runs about 48 beds, with an upgrade programme under way since its formal opening in January 2024. Serious cases are stabilised and sent to Vachira in town or, for the insured, to Bangkok Hospital Siriroj on the bypass road, fifteen minutes away.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Chalong, Rawai, Nai Harn, Kata or Karon who needs an emergency room quickly, budget travellers with a minor illness or injury in the south of the island, and passengers coming off a boat at Chalong pier unwell. It is small and Thai-first, with some English in the emergency room; for anything more than minor, and for anyone insured, Dibuk Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Siriroj are both within fifteen to twenty minutes and are where you will be sent anyway.
Cost and insurance
Public pricing — the cheapest care in the south of the island. Pay at the cashier; expect to pay and claim rather than direct billing, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate. It is worth knowing that a 1669 ambulance will often bring an uninsured patient from Rawai or Kata here first; if you have insurance and are able to say so, you can ask to be taken to a private hospital instead, and your insurer’s assistance line can make the same request.
Getting there
On Chao Fa West Road just north of the Chalong circle and underpass, almost opposite HomePro — ten minutes from Rawai and Nai Harn, fifteen from Kata and Karon, five from Chalong pier and twenty from Phuket Town.
