The oldest of Chaweng’s private hospitals, opened in 1997 on the beach road at the quiet northern end of the strip. It is a small general hospital with an emergency department, outpatient clinics and a handful of inpatient rooms, used mostly by hotel guests nearby for the everyday complaints of a beach holiday. Its website was offline when we checked in September 2026, so phone before you go, and try the mobile number first.
What it is known for
Location and long service. Samui International Hospital sits on North Chaweng Beach Road, at the calm end of the strip where the bigger resorts are, and has been treating foreigners since 1997 — it was the island’s international hospital before the Bangkok Hospital group arrived. It is small: an emergency room, outpatient clinics in general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and gynaecology, a dental surgery and a few inpatient beds, with staff who speak English and, its listings say, some French and German. It is the kind of place for a fever, an ear infection, a scooter graze or stitches; anything complicated is stabilised and sent up the ring road to Bangkok Hospital Samui.
Who it suits
Visitors staying in North Chaweng or Choeng Mon who want a doctor within walking distance for something minor, and anyone who would rather be seen in a small, clinic-sized hospital than a large one. It is not the place for major trauma or surgery, and it is not the newest facility on the island; if you have insurance and a serious problem, go to Bangkok Hospital Samui or Wattanapat instead. Because its website was down when this page was written, check that it is open before setting out — a phone call, or the hotel reception, will tell you in a minute.
Cost and insurance
Mid-range private prices, well below Bangkok Hospital Samui. Expect to pay at the desk and claim back; direct billing with insurers is unlikely at a hospital this size, though it will produce the itemised receipt and English medical certificate an insurer needs. A deposit is normal on admission. Ask for the estimate before treatment starts, and if the bill for anything beyond an outpatient visit looks large, it is worth asking your insurer whether a transfer to a bigger hospital would be covered instead — the assistance line can answer that in one call.
Getting there
On Chaweng Beach Road towards its northern end, a short walk from the North Chaweng resorts and five to ten minutes by songthaew or Bolt from the centre of Chaweng; from Bophut or the airport allow ten to fifteen minutes. If nobody answers and you need help now, Thai International Hospital on the ring road is a few minutes away and open around the clock, and Bangkok Hospital Samui is ten minutes up the road.
