If money is not the first question, this is where most visitors end up: a 50-bed private hospital on the ring road in Bophut, between the airport and Chaweng, part of the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services group and JCI-accredited since 2012. It runs a 24-hour trauma and emergency department, an intensive-care unit and a 24-hour evacuation service by road and boat, and it is where the serious cases from Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are brought.
What it is known for
Being the hospital the rest of the islands send their serious cases to. Bangkok Hospital Samui opened in 2004 and is the BDMS group’s hospital for the Gulf: 50 beds, a 24-hour trauma and emergency department, an intensive-care unit, operating theatres and heart, brain and sports-medicine centres among its specialties. Its emergency service includes a 24-hour evacuation team and a boat ambulance for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, and it has long experience with scooter trauma and diving injuries. It has held JCI accreditation since 2012, the international standard the big Bangkok hospitals hold, and it runs an international patient centre with interpreters and insurance staff.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone seriously ill or injured, and anyone who wants to be treated in English without waiting. The international centre handles insurer guarantees, interpreters and the paperwork embassies and insurers ask for afterwards. It is also the right destination for a diving injury that needs a doctor before or after the chamber, and for a Koh Phangan or Koh Tao patient whose local hospital has said the word ‘transfer’: the boat is the hospital’s own. Families use it for children, long-stay residents for check-ups and surgery. It is not a budget option, and for a simple cut or stomach bug the smaller private hospitals will see you faster and cheaper.
Cost and insurance
The most expensive hospital on the islands, and priced like the Bangkok flagships. Direct billing is available only to insurers the hospital has a contract with — it has many — and everyone else pays up front or leaves a deposit on admission, so ring your insurer’s assistance line before you go if the situation allows. An evacuation from Koh Phangan or Koh Tao is billed as its own item, and it is not cheap; get it authorised. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep every receipt and the discharge summary — both are needed for a claim, and the hospital will produce an English medical certificate on request.
Getting there
On Thaweerat Phakdee Road, the ring road, in Bophut between Samui airport and the north end of Chaweng — roughly ten minutes by taxi from central Chaweng, fifteen from Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village and twenty-five to thirty from Nathon or Lamai. Bolt and Grab both work on Samui, and any songthaew running the ring road between Chaweng and Bophut passes the gate. In an emergency call the hospital on +66 77 429 500, or 1719 from a Thai phone, rather than driving: it runs its own ambulances around the clock and, for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, the boat. Evening traffic through Chaweng adds ten minutes.
