The government hospital for Koh Phangan: a Ministry of Public Health community hospital that opened in 1987 with ten beds and now has about thirty, on the west-coast road between Thong Sala and Srithanu. It has an emergency room, general outpatient clinics, maternity and dental services, and it stabilises and refers anything serious to Koh Samui Hospital or to a private hospital on Samui. It is the cheap option on the island, and often the nearest one.
What it is known for
Being the island’s public hospital, and the cheap one. Koh Phangan Hospital is a Ministry of Public Health community hospital — the smallest class of Thai district hospital — that opened in 1987 with ten beds and has grown to about thirty. It has an emergency room, outpatient clinics, a maternity service and a dental clinic, and a modest laboratory and X-ray. What it does not have is the specialist cover of a general hospital: serious trauma, surgery beyond the routine and anything needing intensive care is stabilised and sent to Samui, by ambulance to the pier and boat across, or by the Bangkok Hospital Samui evacuation service if the patient is insured.
Who it suits
Travellers on a budget or without insurance who need a doctor, islanders, and anyone on the west or north coast for whom it is the nearest emergency room — from Srithanu and Haad Yao it is closer than Thong Sala’s private hospital. It is Thai-first: forms are in Thai and English is limited to the emergency room and some doctors, so bring someone who can translate if you can. After a Full Moon Party injury at Haad Rin it is a half-hour ride away; First Western in Thong Sala is closer, and for anything serious with insurance the boat to Samui is the real answer.
Cost and insurance
Public prices: a consultation, basic tests and medicine typically cost a few hundred baht, an admission a few thousand. Pay at the cashier. Direct billing from an insurer is not something to expect here; ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate if you plan to claim, and be prepared to explain what you need. If a transfer to Samui is proposed and you have insurance, call the assistance line before you go — the insurer may prefer to move you by the Bangkok Hospital Samui boat and admit you there, and it will want to authorise that first.
Getting there
On the west-coast road at Wok Tum, a few minutes north of Thong Sala towards Srithanu — about ten minutes from the Thong Sala piers by motorbike taxi or car, twenty from Srithanu and Haad Yao, and half an hour from Haad Rin. Say ‘rong phayaban Koh Phangan’ and add ‘rong phayaban rat’, the government hospital, so a driver does not take you to a private one. Switchboard +66 77 377 034; in an emergency 1669 works on the island and will send the hospital’s ambulance, which is the only one on Koh Phangan besides First Western’s.
Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
