A small private hospital in Thong Sala, the island’s port town, run as a Thai-Western partnership and aimed squarely at foreign visitors: an emergency room, a 24-hour hotline and ambulance, general and specialist clinics, an operating theatre, inpatient rooms and hotel visits. The same address and phone number are also listed under the name Thai International Hospital Koh Phangan, so do not be thrown if a driver or a website uses that. Serious cases are transferred to Samui.
What it is known for
Being the private, English-speaking hospital on an island of small clinics. First Western Hospital sits in Thong Sala, a short ride from the ferry piers, and is the place most insured visitors to Koh Phangan are sent: a 24-hour hotline and ambulance, an emergency room, outpatient clinics, an operating theatre, intensive-care beds, a general ward and private rooms, plus house and hotel visits. It has years of Full Moon Party experience — cuts, burns, fractures, dehydration and overdoses — and a practised routine for stabilising a patient and moving them to Samui by boat when the injury is beyond the island.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance who is ill or hurt on Koh Phangan, anyone who wants to be seen in English, and the Haad Rin crowd after the Full Moon Party, for whom it is the nearest hospital of any kind. Families use it for children, and long-stay residents for routine care. It is small, so a serious trauma, a cardiac case or anything needing a specialist is stabilised here and transferred to Bangkok Hospital Samui or Koh Samui Hospital; if you can travel and have insurance, the assistance line may send you straight to Samui instead.
Cost and insurance
Private prices, in the mid-range band — more than the public hospital, well below Bangkok Hospital Samui. The hospital says it works with international insurers and can arrange direct billing for an admission where the insurer agrees; outpatient care is pay-and-claim. A deposit is normal on admission. An ambulance call-out, and any speedboat transfer to Samui, are charged separately, so get them authorised by your insurer if you can. Ask for a written estimate first, keep every receipt, and ask for the English medical certificate before you leave the island.
Getting there
In Thong Sala, the port town where the ferries from Samui, Koh Tao and the mainland land — a few minutes by motorbike taxi or songthaew from the piers, twenty to thirty minutes from Haad Rin and about the same from Srithanu and Haad Yao. The hospital’s own ambulance will come to any beach on the island: call +66 77 377 474, which is answered around the clock. Say ‘rong phayaban First Western’; every driver in Thong Sala knows it, and most of them have delivered a Full Moon casualty to its door at some point.
