The only hospital on Koh Tao, and a small one: a Ministry of Public Health community hospital of about ten beds in Mae Haad, just off the road up from the main pier. It has an emergency service, outpatient clinics, a laboratory, X-ray and dental care, and it arranges evacuation by speedboat or helicopter to Samui or Chumphon for anything it cannot handle. Diving injuries go first to the island’s recompression chamber, a few minutes away.
What it is known for
Being there at all. Koh Tao Hospital is a small public community hospital of around ten beds in Mae Haad, a couple of minutes on foot from the ferry piers, and the only hospital on an island of dive schools and scooters. It offers outpatient clinics in office hours, a laboratory, X-ray, dental care, minor surgery and an emergency service for accidents, and its main job with a serious case is to stabilise and evacuate: by speedboat to Samui, around two hours, or by helicopter, to Koh Samui Hospital, Bangkok Hospital Samui or the mainland at Chumphon. Diving injuries go to the SSS recompression chamber in Mae Haad, which opened in 2023.
Who it suits
Anyone on Koh Tao who needs a doctor: there is no private hospital, only clinics, so it is the emergency room for everyone from backpackers to dive instructors. It is the right first stop for a scooter crash, a deep coral cut, a fever or a suspected fracture. It is not equipped for major trauma, surgery or intensive care; if you have insurance, tell the staff, and call your assistance line early, because the evacuation to Samui is the expensive and time-critical part. English is limited, but the dive schools are used to helping their students through it.
Cost and insurance
Public prices — a consultation, tests and medicine for a few hundred baht, paid at the desk. Insurers will not direct-bill here; ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate for the claim. An evacuation by speedboat or helicopter is a different matter: it costs real money and must be authorised by your insurer if you want it paid for, so get the assistance line involved as soon as the word is mentioned. Uninsured and fit to travel, the scheduled ferry to Samui and then Koh Samui Hospital is the affordable route, and the staff here will say so.
Getting there
In Mae Haad village, just off the road that climbs from the main ferry pier — at the bottom of the hill, well signposted, a two-minute walk from the piers and ten minutes by motorbike taxi from Sairee or Chalok Baan Kao. Say ‘rong phayaban Koh Tao’. Phone +66 77 456 490 in office hours; for an emergency at night go straight there, or call 1669, and for a diving emergency call the chamber on +66 81 081 9777, which answers around the clock. The dive school you went out with will know the drill and will usually take you.
Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
