Bandon International was the island’s first private hospital and has been running for more than thirty years from its site on the ring road in Bophut, a couple of kilometres west of the airport. It is small — room for about 30 patients — with an emergency room, outpatient clinics and a paediatric ward, and it is the private hospital closest to Bophut, Maenam and Bangrak. It has no working website; the domains listed for it in old directories now point elsewhere, so phone.
What it is known for
Being first, and being close to the north coast. Bandon International Hospital opened more than thirty years ago as Koh Samui’s first private hospital, and it is still a modest one: a building on the ring road in Bophut with an emergency room, general and specialist outpatient clinics, a paediatric ward and room for around thirty inpatients. It is not the newest facility — the equipment shows its age in places — but it is open around the clock, English is spoken, and for the villages of the north coast it is the nearest private hospital of any kind. Bigger cases go along the road to Bangkok Hospital Samui.
Who it suits
Travellers staying in Bophut, Maenam, Bangrak or Choeng Mon with a minor illness or injury, families with a sick child, and residents who want a lower-cost private consultation without the trip to Chaweng. It is also a sensible first stop after a scooter fall on the north side of the island, to be cleaned up and, if necessary, referred. It is not the place for major surgery or serious trauma; if you have insurance and a serious problem, go straight to Bangkok Hospital Samui, a few minutes east along the same road, or to Wattanapat Hospital, which opened in 2023 on the same stretch.
Cost and insurance
Among the cheapest private options on the island. Pay at the desk; insurance is pay-and-claim for most visitors, though the hospital will provide the itemised receipt and an English medical certificate that a claim needs. A deposit is asked for on admission. Ask for the estimate first, and for anything beyond an outpatient visit weigh the price against what a larger hospital would charge with your insurer’s guarantee behind it — a phone call to the assistance line settles that, and the larger hospitals are only minutes away.
Getting there
On the Samui ring road in Bophut, roughly 2.5 km west of the airport — songthaews between Nathon, Maenam and Chaweng pass the door, and a Bolt from Chaweng takes about fifteen minutes, from Maenam ten. Say ‘rong phayaban Ban Don’; the name is older than most of the island’s roads and every driver knows it. Switchboard +66 77 332 706; the older 077 245 236 line is still listed and may still answer. There is no website to check, so if it is not an emergency call ahead, and in an emergency call the hospital or 1669 rather than driving yourself.
