A 263-bed private hospital in Bang Kapi, out on Lat Phrao Soi 111 well east of the tourist districts, that has built a large medical-tourism practice around orthopaedics, spine surgery, cancer and complex operations. JCI-accredited, with interpreters in about 20 languages and a 24-hour emergency room; better suited to planned treatment than to a walk-in emergency from Sukhumvit.

What it is known for

Planned treatment for international patients. Vejthani opened in 1994 and grew into one of Bangkok’s busiest medical-tourism hospitals without ever sitting in a tourist district: it is in Bang Kapi, in the east of the city, and its patients come to it deliberately, from across Asia and well beyond — the interpreter list, with Arabic, Burmese, Khmer, Russian and Japanese among about twenty languages, says where from. It is JCI-accredited, with additional JCI certifications for specific clinical programmes, and is best known for orthopaedics and spine surgery, alongside cancer and cardiac work. The building holds 263 beds and a 24-hour emergency department, and the hospital runs its own ambulances and an international patient service.

Who it suits

People who have come to Bangkok for a specific operation or course of treatment and chosen this hospital in advance, and residents of the eastern suburbs — Lat Phrao, Bang Kapi, Ramkhamhaeng — for whom it is the nearest big private hospital. It is not the obvious choice for a tourist taken ill on Sukhumvit or in Silom: the trip east can take an hour in traffic, and the hospitals on this page nearer the centre offer the same standard of emergency care with a shorter ambulance ride.

Cost and insurance

Private international-hospital prices, though package pricing for planned surgery is a large part of the business and often works out below the Sukhumvit flagships for the same operation. Direct billing is available to insurers with a contract; otherwise a deposit on admission and pay-and-claim for outpatient care. Ask for the written estimate — for a package, ask what it excludes — and keep the receipts and the discharge summary for the claim.

Getting there

On Lat Phrao Soi 111 in Bang Kapi, in the east of the city. By rail, the MRT Yellow Line monorail runs along Lat Phrao Road: Lat Phrao 101 and Bang Kapi are the nearest stations, each a short motorbike-taxi or taxi ride from the hospital gate. By road it is thirty minutes to an hour from Sukhumvit depending on traffic, and a taxi driver will want the soi number. Switchboard +66 2 734 0000; international hotline +66 85 223 8888.
