The flagship of BDMS, Thailand’s largest private hospital group, on a campus off New Phetchaburi Road that also holds the group’s heart, cancer and neuroscience hospitals. About 490 beds, a trauma centre open around the clock, JCI-accredited six times running, and the base for the 1724 medevac service that moves serious cases from the provinces to the capital.
What it is known for
Being the mother ship. Bangkok Hospital opened in 1972 as one of the country’s first private hospitals and grew into Bangkok Dusit Medical Services, which now runs dozens of hospitals across Thailand, Pattaya’s and Phuket’s among them. The Soi Soonvijai campus is where the group concentrates its specialist hospitals — Bangkok Heart Hospital, Bangkok Cancer Hospital and Bangkok International Hospital for brain and bone — around a general hospital of about 490 inpatient beds. The trauma centre runs 24 hours, and the BDMS emergency and medevac service (1724) operates by road, sea and air across Thailand and into neighbouring countries. It has been accredited by JCI six consecutive times, most recently in 2023.
Who it suits
Insured travellers and anyone with a serious illness who wants the widest specialist choice on one site: if a problem needs a cardiac unit, a cancer centre and a neurosurgeon in the same week, this campus has them. Expatriates on the eastern side of the city — Phetchaburi, Rama IX, Thonglor and Ekkamai — treat it as their local hospital. Visitors staying on Sukhumvit will find Bumrungrad or Samitivej closer; those in Silom, BNH. It is also where BDMS hospitals in the provinces send the cases they cannot handle, so a patient stabilised in Pattaya or Hua Hin may well wake up here.
Cost and insurance
Priced alongside Bumrungrad at the top of the Thai market. Direct billing exists for insurers under contract with BDMS, which includes many of the large international assistance companies; otherwise a deposit is asked for on admission and outpatient care is pay-and-claim. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure and keep every receipt and the discharge summary; the international patient desk will prepare the paperwork an insurer or embassy asks for. If you are being transferred in from another BDMS hospital, ask the sending hospital to confirm that your guarantee of payment travels with you.
Getting there
Off New Phetchaburi Road on Soi Soonvijai, east of the Asok junction and north of Sukhumvit’s Phrom Phong district. The nearest stations are MRT Phetchaburi and BTS Phrom Phong, each linked to the campus by the hospital’s shuttle buses, which also run along Phetchaburi Road, Ekkamai and Rama IX.
