What it is known for
The neighbourhood hospital for the wealthiest stretch of Sukhumvit, which in practice means a very well-equipped one. Samitivej Sukhumvit opened in 1979, holds JCI accreditation and is now part of the BDMS group. It is a 275-bed tertiary hospital with more than 40 specialist centres — its liver and digestive institute, bone and joint centre, spine centre and women’s health centre are the best known — and a reputation for maternity and children’s care that draws expatriate families from all over the city. The emergency room and ambulance service run 24 hours, and the hospital describes its workforce as multilingual, with interpreters for international patients.
Who it suits
Anyone staying between Asok and Ekkamai who wants private care without crossing the city, families with children, and expatriates who want a hospital that knows them. It is calmer and a little less tourist-oriented than Bumrungrad, and many long-term residents prefer it for exactly that reason. For major trauma, Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital are the bigger centres, though Samitivej’s emergency room will stabilise a serious case and, if need be, transfer it to its sister hospital on Soi Soonvijai.

Top-tier private prices, in the same band as Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital. Direct billing depends on your insurer’s contract with the hospital or with BDMS; otherwise a deposit on admission and pay-and-claim for outpatient visits. The hospital’s international desk will call your insurer for a guarantee of payment if there is time. Ask for a written estimate first, and for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before you leave — both are routine, and both are needed for the claim.
Getting there
About a kilometre up Sukhumvit Soi 49 from Sukhumvit Road — too far to walk comfortably from the BTS if you are unwell, but a five-minute taxi or motorbike-taxi ride from BTS Phrom Phong or Thong Lo. The soi is also reachable from the Thonglor side through the lanes off Sukhumvit 55.
