Thailand’s oldest private hospital, founded in 1898 as the Bangkok Nursing Home and rebuilt in 1996 on Convent Road, a quiet street between Silom and Sathorn. Mid-sized, JCI-accredited, English-speaking and long the expatriate community’s hospital in the business district, with a 24-hour emergency room and ambulance.
What it is known for
History and location. The Bangkok Nursing Home was set up by the city’s British community in the 1890s and opened to patients in 1898, which makes BNH the oldest private hospital in Thailand; the current building went up in 1996 and the name changed a few years later. It is a mid-sized general hospital rather than a giant, with a 24-hour emergency department and ambulance, an intensive-care unit, and well-regarded departments for women’s health, fertility, orthopaedics and rehabilitation. It holds both JCI accreditation and Thailand’s own HA hospital accreditation, and it is the hospital many of the people who work in Silom and Sathorn use.
Who it suits
Visitors staying in Silom, Sathorn, Surawong or around Lumphini Park who want an English-speaking private hospital within walking distance, business travellers, and anyone who prefers a smaller hospital to the international giants on Sukhumvit. It is a sensible first stop for a moderate emergency in the district: the emergency room can stabilise and, for the most serious cases, transfer. King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the huge public hospital, is a few hundred metres away on Rama IV if money is the issue.
Cost and insurance
Upper-tier private prices, though generally a little below Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital for the same visit. Direct billing is available to insurers with a contract; otherwise expect a deposit on admission and pay-and-claim for outpatient care. Ask for a written estimate before treatment, and for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate on the way out — the hospital is used to producing both, and insurers will ask for them.
Getting there
Convent Road runs between Silom Road and Sathorn Road; the hospital is halfway along, about five minutes’ walk from BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Si Lom and a short walk from most Silom and Sathorn hotels. Taxis and Grab cars can pull into the forecourt, and the street is quiet enough that an ambulance gets in and out quickly even at rush hour.
