Mahidol University’s second great teaching hospital, opened in 1969 on Rama VI Road a short ride west of Victory Monument. About 1,000 beds and the full range of specialties at public prices, serving the north-central districts — Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi, Ari and Din Daeng — that the Sukhumvit and Silom hospitals do not.
What it is known for
Academic medicine at scale. The Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital opened its hospital in May 1969 and has since grown into a campus of more than a thousand beds with a reputation for research, super-tertiary care and complex referrals from across the country. It is the public hospital for the north-central districts around Victory Monument and, like Siriraj and Chulalongkorn, runs at public prices, in Thai, with the queues that implies; a newer building on the campus houses paid premium clinics for those who want a shorter wait. For a visitor it matters mainly as the nearest large emergency room to Victory Monument, Ari and Ratchathewi.
Who it suits
Travellers staying around Victory Monument, Ari, Phaya Thai or Ratchathewi who need serious care without insurance, and anyone in that part of the city for whom it is the nearest large emergency room. It is a working public hospital rather than a visitor-oriented one: bring a Thai speaker, expect to wait, and expect the paperwork in Thai. For a minor problem with insurance, Phyathai 2 on Phahonyothin Road is the nearest private alternative, and Bumrungrad is fifteen minutes away by taxi outside rush hour.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices; foreigners are charged more than Thais but far less than any private hospital, and the premium clinics cost more than the ordinary ones while still undercutting the private sector. Pay at the cashier, keep the itemised receipt and ask for a medical certificate in English if you intend to claim — insurers almost never direct-bill a public hospital, so expect to pay first and recover the money later. Bring your passport; registration needs it.
Getting there
On Rama VI Road in Ratchathewi, about a kilometre west of Victory Monument; BTS Victory Monument and BTS Sanam Pao are each a short taxi or motorbike-taxi ride, and the hospital’s own website lists the bus routes that stop outside.
