The teaching hospital of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, two hundred metres from Cho Ray on the next street. It runs about a thousand beds across three campuses, and it has a reputation among Vietnamese patients for being the best-organised of the big public hospitals — still busy, still Vietnamese-speaking, but easier to get through than its neighbour.
What it is known for
Being the public hospital that works smoothly. UMC is the teaching hospital of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, financially autonomous since it was founded, and it has built a reputation for shorter queues, clearer signposting and better appointment systems than the other big public hospitals — a real difference when you are ill and cannot read the signs. It runs about a thousand beds across three campuses, with the main one on Hong Bang in Cho Lon, and covers the full range of specialties with a strong surgical and endoscopy record. The emergency department is staffed around the clock.
Who it suits
Uninsured travellers who need proper hospital care and would rather not face Cho Ray’s crowds; anyone needing a scan, an endoscopy or a specialist opinion at public prices; and anyone whose problem is serious but not immediately life-threatening. Do not expect an international patient service — the hospital does not advertise one, and although its website has an English edition and it lists English as a contact language, consultations and paperwork are in Vietnamese. Bring someone who can translate, or a translation app and patience.
Cost and insurance
Public prices, with foreigners on a higher tariff than Vietnamese patients and still paying a small fraction of what an international hospital charges. Payment is at the cashier, step by step, usually in cash. Direct billing by a foreign insurer is not something to expect at a Vietnamese public hospital, so plan on paying and claiming afterwards. Ask for an itemised receipt at every stage and for a medical report in English before you leave — requesting it at discharge is far easier than trying to obtain it from another country later.
Getting there
At 215 Hong Bang in Cho Lon, about four and a half kilometres west of Ben Thanh Market, fifteen to twenty-five minutes by taxi. Cho Ray is two hundred metres away and the hospital’s own second campus is at 201 Nguyen Chi Thanh, on Cho Ray’s street, so be specific about which address you want — give the driver the street name and number rather than the hospital name alone.
