The hospital most foreign residents of Ho Chi Minh City name first: a fully foreign-owned private hospital opened in the Phu My Hung district in 2003 by a group of French doctors, and part of Singapore’s Thomson Medical Group since 2024. It runs a 24-hour accident and emergency department with its own ambulances, around forty-five specialties, and free interpreters in several languages on request.
What it is known for
Being the international hospital that foreign patients in southern Vietnam are most often sent to, and the paperwork that goes with that. FV opened in Phu My Hung in April 2003, was the first hospital in Vietnam accredited by France’s Haute Autorité de Santé, and has held JCI accreditation continuously since 2016, most recently renewed in 2025. Clinically it is a full hospital rather than a large clinic: inpatient wards, intensive care, operating theatres including robotic surgery, a cancer centre, maternity and neonatal units, and around forty-five specialties. Accident and emergency runs around the clock with a dedicated stroke unit and an ambulance fitted out as a mobile intensive-care unit.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone facing something serious or complicated, and anyone who would rather be treated in English or French than navigate a Vietnamese hospital. The hospital states that it arranges free interpretation in several other languages, 24 hours a day, if you ask when you book. Families use it for maternity and paediatrics, and long-stay residents for everything. It is not the cheap option, and for a mild stomach upset or a cold it is more hospital than the problem needs; a pharmacy or a smaller private hospital nearer your hotel will do.
Cost and insurance
International prices, which in Vietnam means roughly ten to twenty times what the same consultation costs in a public hospital. FV deals with insurers routinely and has a dedicated insurance desk, but direct billing depends on your insurer having an arrangement with the hospital, so telephone the assistance number on your policy before you go if there is time. Without a guarantee of payment expect to pay as you go, and to leave a deposit on admission. Ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep the itemised receipt and an English-language medical report — a claim will need both.
Getting there
In Phu My Hung, the planned district in the south of the city, about eight kilometres from Ben Thanh Market — twenty minutes by taxi when the roads are clear and considerably longer in the evening rush, since almost everything southbound funnels over the Kenh Te bridge. Grab and Be both come here, and the hospital is on the main road with its own forecourt. In an emergency call the hospital’s own ambulance line, +84 28 3511 3500, rather than driving yourself. Note that FV’s numbers changed in 2025: anything beginning 5411 is out of date.
