The referral hospital for infectious disease across the whole south, on the Vo Van Kiet boulevard beside the Tau Hu canal, on a site that has been a hospital since the 1860s. Dengue, rabies exposure, tetanus, meningitis and hepatitis are its daily work, and it hosts a long-running clinical research unit run with Oxford University. For a traveller it is the specialist hospital that a fever, or an animal bite, actually calls for.
What it is known for
Infection, and nothing else. This is the referral hospital for infectious disease across the whole of southern Vietnam, on the old Cho Quan hospital site beside the Tau Hu canal, founded in the early 1860s and so among the oldest hospitals in the country. It takes what the general hospitals send on: severe dengue, rabies exposure, tetanus, meningitis, hepatitis and drug-resistant infection. It has hosted a clinical research unit run with Oxford University since 1991, which has put its dengue and brain-infection work into the international literature. It also runs a large vaccination unit, open seven days a week, which is where a rabies course after an animal bite is given.
Who it suits
Anyone with a fever that will not break, and anyone bitten or scratched by an animal. Dengue is endemic in Ho Chi Minh City and a fever lasting more than two days needs a blood test rather than a pharmacy; this is the hospital that reads those tests all day. Rabies exposure needs treatment the same day, not the next week, and the hospital stocks both the vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin. It is not a general hospital — do not bring a broken bone or a chest pain here — and it is a public one, so expect crowds, Vietnamese paperwork and long waits in the outpatient department.
Cost and insurance
Public prices, which for a consultation, a dengue blood test or a course of rabies vaccine come to a small fraction of what an international hospital charges for the same thing. Payment is at the cashier as you go, generally in cash. Insurers do not direct-bill Vietnamese public hospitals, so pay and claim, keep the receipts, and ask for a medical report in English before you leave. If you are starting a rabies course here, get the schedule written down: the remaining doses may have to be given in another country.
Getting there
At 764 Vo Van Kiet, the wide boulevard that follows the canal between District 1 and Cho Lon, about three kilometres from Ben Thanh Market and ten to fifteen minutes by taxi — a straight run west along the water. Grab and Be both come here and the hospital fronts the boulevard, so a car can pull up outside. The switchboard is +84 28 3923 8704.
