Lanna Hospital opened on 1 July 1976 and is the private hospital many of Chiang Mai’s long-stay foreigners and retirees actually use: around 180 beds on Sukkasem Road north of the old city, a heart centre and a check-up centre, private-hospital service at prices well below the two international-brand hospitals. What it is known for
Value, and half a century of treating the city. Lanna Hospital opened on 1 July 1976 and has grown into a general hospital of about 180 beds on Sukkasem Road, north of the old city, with a heart centre, a health check-up centre and the everyday specialties. It is not JCI-accredited and does not pretend to be a luxury hospital; what it offers is competent private care at prices that long-stay foreigners and retirees have found sustainable for decades, which is why so many of them use it as their regular hospital. One practical note: older directories still list the number 053 999 777, but the hospital’s own pages now give 052 134 777.
Who it suits
Budget-conscious travellers who still want a private hospital, long-stay residents and retirees on a fixed income, and anyone staying north of the moat around Chang Phueak or Santitham, for whom it is the nearest private option. English is spoken, though not as fluently as at Ram or Bangkok Hospital, and the hospital’s own literature is largely in Thai. It handles common illnesses, fractures, minor surgery and childbirth comfortably; for major trauma or complex surgery you would be transferred, or better, go directly to Ram, Bangkok Hospital or Suan Dok.
Cost and insurance
Among the lowest prices of the private hospitals in Chiang Mai — well under Ram and Bangkok Hospital, above the public hospitals. Some insurers have arrangements with it; most visitors pay and claim, and a deposit is asked for on admission. The hospital’s check-up centre publishes package prices, which are a useful benchmark for what it charges generally. Ask for an English medical certificate and an itemised receipt before you leave, and confirm any procedure’s estimate in writing first.
Getting there
Sukkasem Road runs east off Chotana Road — the northward continuation of Chang Phueak Road — about two kilometres north of Chang Phueak Gate, and the hospital stands at its western end near the Chang Phueak bus terminal. From the old city it is ten minutes by car or a red songthaew heading north; from Nimman about fifteen. Its main website may refuse to load from some connections, so do not read anything into that.
