What it is known for
Size and range. Chiang Mai Ram is the largest private hospital in northern Thailand, at around 350 beds, and among the first in the region to earn JCI accreditation. Its own site lists specialist centres for neurology and stroke, cardiology, orthopaedic surgery and cancer, a 24-hour emergency room with emergency-medicine specialists on duty, a 24-hour cardiac catheterisation laboratory and a 24-hour patient-transfer and ambulance service. An international patient centre handles interpreters, insurers and embassy paperwork. Location does the rest: it sits on Boonruangrit Road just outside the west moat, ten minutes’ walk from Nimman and five minutes by car from Tha Phae Gate, so it is the private hospital most visitors end up in.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance, anyone with a serious illness or injury, and the many Nimman-based visitors who can simply walk in. Families use its children’s and women’s clinics; long-stay residents use it for check-ups, dental work and surgery; the smaller hospitals transfer the cases they cannot handle here or to Suan Dok. It is also the sensible choice for a suspected heart attack or stroke, because the catheterisation laboratory runs around the clock. Waits are short, English is spoken at the desk and by most doctors, and the hospital is used to producing the receipts and certificates that insurers ask for.
Cost and insurance
Top of the Chiang Mai private range, though generally below what the flagship Bangkok hospitals charge for comparable care. The hospital publishes a long list of contracted insurers and will direct-bill those for an admission; anyone else pays up front or leaves a deposit, and outpatient visits are usually pay-and-claim regardless. Ring your insurer’s assistance line before you go if there is time, ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep every receipt and the discharge summary. Getting there
Boonruangrit Road runs along the outside of the west moat, and the hospital is on it between the north-west (Hua Lin) corner and Suan Dok Gate. From Nimman it is a ten-minute walk east; from Tha Phae Gate about five minutes by car around the moat; from the airport fifteen. Red songthaews circling the moat pass the door, and Grab and Bolt both come here.
