The newest of the big hospitals: a JCI-accredited private hospital opened in 2014 by the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services group, which describes it as a 122-bed facility with 21 specialist centres and clinics and a full emergency service. It is on the Superhighway ring road east of the Ping, so it is a drive from the old city and Nimman, but it brings the group’s insurer contracts and international-patient systems to the north.
What it is known for
The BDMS group’s northern flagship. Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai opened in 2014 as the 36th hospital in the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services network, is JCI-accredited, and describes itself as a 122-bed facility with 21 specialist centres and clinics offering the full range of emergency, inpatient, outpatient and surgical care under one roof. Being part of BDMS matters in practice: the same insurer contracts, the same international-patient systems and the same referral path to Bangkok as its sister hospitals in Pattaya and Phuket. It also runs a small satellite clinic near Tha Phae Gate for minor complaints in the old city. The hospital itself is on the Superhighway east of the Ping, a drive from wherever you are staying.
Who it suits
Insured travellers whose policy or assistance company steers them to a BDMS hospital, anyone wanting a specialist opinion with international-standard paperwork, and visitors staying east of the river or out towards San Kamphaeng, for whom it is the nearest large private hospital. It is the newest of the big hospitals and feels it. It is less convenient for anyone in Nimman or the old city, where Chiang Mai Ram is walkable; for a genuine emergency from there, distance should decide, not brand. Cases beyond what Chiang Mai can handle are typically moved to the group’s Bangkok hospitals.
Cost and insurance
Priced like the other BDMS hospitals — at the top of the local market, though usually below the group’s Bangkok flagship for comparable care. Direct billing is available to the many insurers BDMS has contracts with, generally for admissions rather than outpatient visits; without a contract you pay a deposit on admission and settle before discharge. Ask for the written estimate first, keep the itemised receipts and the discharge summary, and expect the hospital to be efficient about medical certificates in English. Getting there
On the Superhighway (Route 11), the ring road on the east side of the city, in Nong Pa Khrang a few kilometres south of the Central Festival mall. Allow fifteen to twenty minutes by car from the old city or the airport, more in the late-afternoon crush when the Superhighway crawls. It is not somewhere you walk or catch a songthaew to; use Grab or Bolt, or call the hospital and ask for its ambulance. If you are near Tha Phae Gate with something minor, the hospital’s clinic there saves the trip.
