The Ministry of Health’s referral hospital for Bali and the islands east of it, with 760 beds by its own June 2025 count and every major department: emergency, integrated cardiac care, cancer, intensive care, central surgery, forensic medicine and a hyperbaric unit. It is cheap by any Western measure and carries the specialists the private hospitals do not. The trade is queues, crowded wards and forms in Indonesian.
What it is known for
Being the end of the line. Prof. Ngoerah, which everyone on the island still calls Sanglah, is the Ministry of Health’s referral hospital for Bali and eastern Indonesia, and at 760 beds it is far larger than every private hospital here put together. It holds the departments the private hospitals cannot staff: integrated cardiac services, a cancer centre, radiotherapy, forensic medicine, a large intensive-care block and a hyperbaric unit among its listed support facilities. When a private hospital in the south says a case needs transferring and there is no time to fly, this is usually where it goes.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real treatment at a price they can pay; anyone whose injury or illness is beyond what a small private hospital can finish; and anyone brought in by a public ambulance, because this is where 119 tends to deliver a serious case in Denpasar. It is not the place for a quick consultation about an upset stomach. Registration is Indonesian-first, the outpatient queues are long, and English is limited to the emergency department and some of the doctors. Bring someone who speaks Indonesian if you possibly can.
Cost and insurance
Public prices. A foreign patient pays more than an Indonesian on national insurance and still a small fraction of what the international hospitals in Kuta or Nusa Dua charge for the same treatment, which is exactly why an uninsured traveller ends up here. Payment is at the cashier, in cash or by card, and a deposit is normal on admission. Do not expect a foreign insurer to be billed directly — this is pay-and-claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and a medical certificate in English before you leave, and allow time for it.
Getting there
On Jalan Diponegoro in central Denpasar, roughly half an hour from Kuta when the Bypass is moving and considerably more when it is not, twenty minutes from Sanur and a little over an hour from Ubud. Grab and Gojek both work in Denpasar. Say Sanglah rather than the new name: the hospital was renamed but the old name is still on the road signs, in the taxi drivers’ heads and on most insurance lists. The emergency entrance is signed IGD.
