A four-storey private hospital on the Bypass Ngurah Rai at Simpang Siur, the junction every road out of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak funnels into. It opened in 1998, was built for foreign visitors rather than adapted for them, and runs a 24-hour accident and emergency centre with its own ambulances, an intensive-care unit, an operating theatre and CT scanning. It holds Australian ACHS International accreditation and works directly with several hundred named travel insurers and assistance companies.
What it is known for
Road injuries, and being open when they happen. BIMC Kuta opened in 1998 on the Bypass Ngurah Rai at Simpang Siur, the roundabout every road out of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak feeds into, and it was built for foreign visitors rather than adapted for them. It runs a 24-hour accident and emergency centre, a 24-hour medical centre with its own pathology and pharmacy, an intensive-care unit, an operating theatre, CT and digital X-ray, isolation rooms and ambulances on standby around the clock. It also runs a first-response emergency motorbike, which in Bali traffic is not a gimmick.
Who it suits
Anyone with travel insurance and anything from gravel rash to a serious injury, and anyone who would rather not explain a symptom twice. It is the hospital hotel doctors and dive operators in the south of the island tend to call first, and the one most assistance companies name. It is not a large hospital, so a case needing major surgery, neurosurgery or a long stay in intensive care is stabilised here and moved on, to Denpasar or out of the country. For a bad graze, a broken wrist, dengue or a stomach infection, it is the obvious door.
Cost and insurance
Priced for foreign patients, which means Western-private rather than Indonesian; that is the trade for the language, the speed and the paperwork. The hospital publishes a long list of insurers and assistance companies it deals with directly, including most of the large European, Australian and Japanese names, so a guarantee of payment can usually be arranged — ring the assistance number on your policy first and let them open the claim. Without that, expect to settle outpatient care on the day and to leave a deposit on admission. Ask for a written estimate before treatment and keep the itemised receipt and the discharge summary.
Getting there
On the Bypass Ngurah Rai at the Simpang Siur roundabout: five to ten minutes from Kuta Beach, about fifteen from Seminyak and ten from the airport, longer whenever the traffic decides otherwise. Grab and Gojek both come here, and any driver knows Simpang Siur without being given an address. In an emergency call the hospital on +62 361 761 263 rather than riding or driving yourself; its ambulances carry a doctor and a nurse in radio contact with the emergency centre. The entrance is on the Bypass itself, so a car can pull straight in.
