Budget in Tioman Island

Tioman is inexpensive. A fan chalet on the beach is sixty ringgit, a meal is fifteen to thirty, and the duty-free status makes alcohol roughly half what it costs on the mainland — which is unusual for a Malaysian island and materially changes an evening's spend. The fixed costs are the ferry and the marine park fee. A backpacker manages on 100–160 ringgit a day; a comfortable trip with diving and a better room runs 300–600.
Accommodation and food
Fan chalets 60–120 ringgit; air-conditioned rooms 130–300; resorts 300–900. Food: a simple meal at a chalet restaurant is 15–30 ringgit, a seafood dinner 40–80, and a beer 8–18 — the last being the duty-free effect, since the same beer would be 20–35 on the mainland. Everything is shipped in, so groceries and snacks carry a premium; buying at Tekek's duty-free shops on arrival and drinking at your chalet is the cheapest arrangement by a wide margin.
Getting there and around
The return ferry from Mersing or Tanjung Gemok is 60–100 ringgit, plus the marine park conservation fee at the jetty. Buses from Kuala Lumpur to Mersing are 35–55 and take four to five hours; from Singapore or Johor Bahru, less. On the island, the sea bus between west-coast bays is a few ringgit and private boat charters are 50–200 depending on distance and time. The cross-island taxi to Juara is 60–100. Getting around Tioman costs very little if you use the sea bus.
Activities
A half-day snorkel trip is 60–120 ringgit including gear. A two-tank dive is 200–300 including equipment. An open-water certification is 1,100–1,600 over three or four days. A round-island boat trip taking in Mukut, the Asah waterfall and the Dragon's Horns is 150–300 per person. Jungle treks are free. Kayak hire is 30–60. Two or three of these fill a week and are the main variable cost after the room.
Practicalities
Bring cash. The ATMs at Tekek and Salang exist and are unreliable, and card acceptance is limited outside the resorts. Work out what you will spend, add a dive course or an extra night, and bring it from the mainland. The single biggest saving available is buying alcohol duty free at Tekek rather than at a bar, and the second is using the sea bus rather than chartering boats between bays.
