Getting There and Around in Tioman Island

Tioman is reached by ferry from two mainland ports in Johor and Pahang — Mersing and Tanjung Gemok — taking around ninety minutes to two hours, or by a small aircraft to the island's short airstrip at Tekek. Both are weather-dependent and both stop or reduce in the monsoon. Once on the island there is no road network beyond a couple of kilometres at Tekek, so movement is by scheduled sea bus, private boat or on foot.
The ferries
Mersing in Johor and Tanjung Gemok in Pahang both run services, taking ninety minutes to two hours depending on the port and the boat, at 60–100 ringgit return. Departures are tide-dependent at Mersing, whose harbour is shallow, so the schedule shifts daily — check on the day rather than assuming a fixed time. Both ports are four to five hours from Kuala Lumpur by bus or car and around two to three from Johor Bahru and Singapore. The marine park conservation fee is collected at the jetty.
Flying
Tioman has a short airstrip at Tekek, notable for an approach that runs between hills and ends at the sea, and it has been served intermittently by small aircraft from Subang and Singapore depending on the operator and the season. Services have started and stopped several times over the years, so check what is currently running rather than relying on an older source. When available it turns a full travel day into an hour, at a substantial price premium.
On the island
The sea bus runs a scheduled service along the west coast linking Tekek, ABC, Salang, Genting and Paya several times a day for a few ringgit, and it is the practical way to move between bays. Private boat charters go when you want and cost considerably more, particularly after dark. Jungle trails connect several bays on foot. Tekek has the island's only road, a couple of kilometres long, plus the steep cross-island road to Juara used by a handful of taxis and motorbikes.
Practicalities
Bring cash: ATMs at Tekek and Salang exist and are unreliable, and card acceptance is limited. Confirm your return ferry when you arrive, not on the day you leave. Note which mainland port you are returning to, since Mersing and Tanjung Gemok are an hour apart and onward transport differs. Buy anything you need before boarding — the island's shops are limited to basics and duty-free. And build a buffer day before an international flight, because the sea decides the schedule.
