The Beaches and Villages in Tioman Island

Tioman's villages sit in bays along the coast, mostly on the sheltered west side, separated by headlands and jungle with almost no road between them. Which one you choose determines the entire trip, because moving between them means a boat. Tekek is the administrative centre with the airstrip and the only real road; ABC and Salang are the backpacker bays; Juara, alone on the east coast, is the quiet surf-facing one; and Genting and Paya are the domestic-tourism resort bays.
The west coast
Tekek is the main village: the jetty, the airstrip, the duty-free shops, a mosque, a clinic and the island's only stretch of road, which runs a couple of kilometres. Air Batang — universally ABC — is just north, a long thin bay of chalets, small restaurants and a walkway along the shore, and is the classic backpacker choice. Salang, at the northern end, is the liveliest, with the most bars and dive shops. Genting and Paya to the south are geared to Malaysian and Singaporean package tourism with larger resorts.
Juara
The only village on the east coast, facing the open South China Sea, and reached either by a single steep road over the spine from Tekek or by boat around the island. It has a long open beach with actual surf in the shoulder months, a turtle conservation project, a much quieter feel and noticeably fewer people. Because it faces east it gets the sunrise rather than the sunset, and because it is exposed the swimming is less consistently calm. For many people it is the best part of Tioman.
Getting between them
The sea bus, a scheduled boat service, runs along the west coast several times a day linking Tekek, ABC, Salang, Genting and Paya for a few ringgit — the cheapest and most useful transport on the island. Private boat charters cost more and go when you want. Jungle trails connect several bays: Tekek to ABC is a short walk over a headland, and Tekek to Juara is a genuine two-to-three-hour trek across the island's spine through rainforest, which is worth doing once.
Practicalities
There is no road network, so plan around boat times — the sea bus stops running in the late afternoon and a private charter after dark is expensive. Electricity is island-generated and reliable in the main villages, patchier in the smaller ones. There are ATMs at Tekek and Salang that sometimes work; bring cash. Phone signal and wi-fi are variable. Tekek's clinic is the only medical facility. And the whole island effectively closes from around November to February for the monsoon.
