Diving and Snorkeling in Tioman Island

Tioman sits inside a marine park and the diving around it and the smaller islands to the north-west is the best on Malaysia's east coast outside the Perhentians. The character is different from the Perhentians': more granite, with boulder formations and submerged pinnacles rather than pure coral reef, and a handful of sites with real fish density. Snorkelling from several beaches is worthwhile, and Tioman is one of the cheapest places in the world to certify, with a large number of schools.
The sites
Tiger Reef, a submerged pinnacle between Tioman and Labas, is the signature site: soft coral, schooling fish, and current that makes it interesting. Chebeh, Labas and Sepoi, the small islands off the north-west, have granite swim-throughs, boulder canyons and good coral. Renggis Island, just off the Berjaya resort, is shallow, easy and reliable for turtles — it is the standard training and first-dive site. Malang Rock and Bahara Rock complete the list. Depths are mostly five to twenty-five metres with visibility of ten to twenty-five.
Snorkelling
Renggis Island, the reef off Salang's northern end, Coral Island (Pulau Tulai) and the marine park area off Tekek all snorkel well and are reachable from the beach or on a short boat hop. Half-day snorkel trips visit three or four sites for 60–120 ringgit including equipment. Green and hawksbill turtles are common and are the reliable sighting; blacktip reef sharks, batfish, bumphead parrotfish and large schools of fusilier fill in. The marine park conservation fee is collected on arrival.
Learning to dive
Tioman has a large number of dive schools concentrated in Salang, ABC and Tekek, and an open-water certification runs 1,100–1,600 ringgit over three or four days in warm, calm, shallow water with Renggis as the training site. As on the Perhentians, the density of schools means standards vary. Ask about instructor ratios, equipment servicing and what is included in the price. Several of the long-established operations have their own boats and compressors and are the safer choice.
Conditions and conservation
Water is twenty-eight to thirty degrees and visibility is best in the drier middle months of the season, dropping after heavy rain. The reefs have suffered bleaching events and physical damage, and Malaysia has periodically closed specific sites for recovery. Use a rash vest or reef-safe sunscreen, do not touch or stand on coral, do not chase turtles, and decline fish feeding where it is offered. The marine park fee funds enforcement, and Tioman's reefs need it.
