Duty Free Shopping in Tioman Island

Tioman has duty-free status, which in a country where alcohol carries heavy excise makes a noticeable difference: beer and spirits cost roughly half what they do on the mainland, and chocolate, perfume and cigarettes are also cheaper. The duty-free shops are concentrated at Tekek near the jetty and airstrip, with a few outlets in the other villages. It is a smaller and less developed operation than Langkawi's, and it is genuinely useful if you are staying a week.
What is cheap
Alcohol is the main event: beer at roughly half mainland prices and spirits at a third to a half, which changes the economics of an evening substantially on an island where a resort bar would otherwise charge Kuala Lumpur prices. Chocolate is sold by the sackful and is the other volume item. Perfume, cosmetics and cigarettes are cheaper. Beyond that the selection is limited — this is a handful of shops on a small island rather than a retail destination, and Langkawi's operation is far larger.
Where
Tekek has the concentration, in a row of shops near the jetty and along the island's short road, and it is the obvious stop on arrival or departure since the ferry and the airstrip are both there. Salang, ABC and the resort bays have smaller outlets. Prices vary a little between shops, so it is worth comparing if you are buying in quantity. Cash is preferred and card acceptance is patchy, which is consistent with everything else on Tioman.
Taking it off the island
Duty-free status applies to the island. Taking goods to the mainland is subject to Malaysian customs allowances on alcohol and tobacco, and a minimum stay requirement has historically applied to some allowances. The rules change and are enforced at the ferry terminals. Check the current position rather than assuming, keep receipts, and be aware that the ferries have no baggage limit while the small aircraft to the island's airstrip very much do.
The context
Tioman belongs to Pahang, a state that is more conservative than the duty-free status suggests, and the island's own population is Muslim. Alcohol is sold in the duty-free shops and served in the tourist establishments in ABC, Salang and the resorts; it is not appropriate in the villages away from the tourist strips, and during Ramadan the situation tightens. Buying cheaply and drinking discreetly at your chalet is both the cheapest and the most appropriate arrangement.
