Perfect 5 Day Itinerary in Tioman Island

Tioman rewards a longer stay than most people give it, because moving between bays takes a boat on a schedule and because the island's best things — the round-island trip, the cross-island trek, a couple of dive days — do not compress well. Five nights is about right. Base yourself in one bay rather than moving, since changing accommodation between villages costs half a day, and use the sea bus and boat trips to reach the rest.
Day 1: arrive and settle
Bus or drive to Mersing or Tanjung Gemok, ferry across in ninety minutes to two hours, and get dropped at your bay — ABC or Salang for the mid-range and backpacker option, Tekek for convenience, Juara for quiet. Pay the marine park fee at the jetty. Confirm your return ferry now, not later. Stock up at the Tekek duty-free shops if you are passing through. Then swim, walk the bay and eat. Snorkelling from the beach is worthwhile in most of the west-coast bays.
Day 2: the water
A dive day or a snorkel trip. Divers: two tanks at Renggis for turtles and then a boat out to Tiger Reef or the Chebeh and Labas pinnacles off the north-west, which is where the best of Tioman's diving is. Snorkellers: a half-day trip to three or four sites for 60–120 ringgit, including Renggis and Coral Island. Afternoon on the beach. This is also the day to start an open-water course if you are certifying, which will take three or four of your five days.
Day 3: round the island
A full-day boat trip around the island: south past the resort bays to Mukut, the fishing village under the Dragon's Horns; the Asah waterfall for a swim in a jungle pool; and a snorkel stop or two on the way back, with the granite spires visible from the water. It is the best single day on Tioman and costs 150–300 ringgit per person. Sunset from your bay afterwards, with duty-free beer, which is the whole west-coast evening.
Days 4–5: the trek and the leaving
Walk the cross-island trail from Tekek to Juara — two to three hours through rainforest, hot and steep — spend the afternoon on Juara's long east-facing beach and at the turtle project, and take a boat or the road taxi back. Or, if the walk does not appeal, take the sea bus to a bay you have not seen and do nothing in it. Last morning: a swim, then the ferry. And note that a same-day connection to Kuala Lumpur means an early boat and a long afternoon on a bus.
