Jungle Trails in Fraser's Hill

Part of the Fraser's Hill travel guide — see every topic in All Fraser's Hill Guides.

Fraser's Hill has a network of signposted jungle trails. Several start from the town roads, so you can walk from your hotel into cool, mossy forest in a few minutes. Some trails are short and easy. Others are steep, muddy and long. Trails can close after storms or landslides, so always check which ones are open on the day.

Hemmant Trail

Hemmant Trail is one of the easiest walks on the hill. It takes about 20 minutes and runs along the forest edge near the town centre and the golf course. The path is fairly flat, which makes it good for families and first-time visitors. It is also a good trail for birds in the early morning. Even on this easy trail, roots and wet leaves can be slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip. You can link it with other short trails to make a longer walk.

Bishop's Trail

Bishop's Trail is a bit harder. It takes about 30 minutes and goes deeper into the forest, with some ups and downs, roots and narrow parts. The forest here is thick and green, with ferns, moss and tall trees. It is a well-known birding trail, so walk slowly and listen. The path can be muddy in the wet months. Tell someone at your hotel where you are going and when you plan to be back, and carry water even on short walks.

Pine Tree Trail

Pine Tree Trail is the longest and hardest trail on the hill. It is about 6 kilometres one way and climbs to Pine Tree Hill. A round trip usually takes 7 to 8 hours. The path is steep in places, with roots, mud and fallen trees. Only fit, experienced hikers should try it. Start early, carry plenty of water and food, and bring rain gear. Register at the tourist information office before you start. Going with a local guide is strongly advised. Ask locally whether a guide or permit is required at the time of your visit.

Other trails and safety

There are several other trails, such as Maxwell, Kindersley and Rompin. Some have been closed for long periods because of fallen trees, landslides or lack of upkeep. Signposts may be old or missing. Before you set out, ask at the tourist information office or your hotel which trails are open and in good condition. Stay on the path and do not walk alone on longer trails. Leeches can appear after rain, so long socks help. Turn back early if heavy rain starts, because paths become slippery fast.
