Birdwatching in Fraser's Hill

Part of the Fraser's Hill travel guide — see every topic in All Fraser's Hill Guides.

Birdwatchers from around the world come to Fraser's Hill. BirdLife International lists it as an Important Bird Area, and more than 250 resident and migrant species have been recorded here. The forest grows close to the roads, so you can see many birds without long hikes. Early morning is the best time, when the birds are active and feeding before the mist lifts.

Why the hill is so good for birds

Fraser's Hill sits in montane forest at about 1,500 metres. This cool, wet forest is home to many birds that do not live in the hot lowlands. The town is small, and quiet roads wind through the trees, so you can walk slowly and watch the canopy from the roadside. Fruiting trees and flowering shrubs near the cottages also bring birds close. In the cooler months, migrant birds from the north pass through and stop here. Because so many species live in a small area, even a short morning walk can give you a long list of birds.

Birds to look for

Look for colourful hill birds such as the long-tailed sibia, the silver-eared mesia and the streaked spiderhunter. Barbets call loudly from the treetops, and you may hear them before you see them. Sunbirds visit flowers near the gardens. Bulbuls, laughingthrushes and flycatchers are common along forest edges. With luck you may see a trogon, a broadbill or a hornbill. Learn a few bird calls before you come, because much of the forest is thick and the birds often stay hidden. A good field guide to the birds of Malaysia will help a lot.

The International Bird Race

The Fraser's Hill International Bird Race started in 1988. It was set up by the local development corporation and the Malaysian Nature Society. Teams try to see and name as many bird species as they can within a set time. The race is usually held in June, but the date can change, so check before you plan a trip around it. During the race weekend the hill is busy and rooms fill up fast. If you prefer quiet birding, come on a different weekend or on a weekday.

Good spots and tips

Walk the quiet roads around the town centre at dawn. The roads near the golf course, the forest edges and the start of the jungle trails are good places to stop and wait. The old road down towards The Gap also passes good forest, but watch for cars. Bring binoculars, a light jacket and rain gear, because mist and showers are common. Wear neutral colours and move slowly. Local bird guides can show you rare species and their calls. Ask at your hotel or the tourist information office for a guide.
