Getting There in Fraser's Hill

Part of the Fraser's Hill travel guide — see every topic in All Fraser's Hill Guides.

Fraser's Hill is about 100 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur. The trip takes about 2 hours by car. The last part is a narrow, winding mountain road through thick forest. There is no public transport to the top, so plan your trip by car, taxi or hired driver.

The route from Kuala Lumpur

From Kuala Lumpur, drive north to the town of Kuala Kubu Bharu. From there the road climbs into the hills past the Selangor Dam and a large reservoir. After many bends you reach The Gap, a pass at the bottom of the final climb. From The Gap, a separate road goes up the last stretch to Fraser's Hill town. The whole trip is about 100 kilometres and usually takes about 2 hours, more in heavy traffic or rain. Leave early to avoid city traffic.

The Gap and the road rules

For many years the last road up from The Gap was so narrow that cars took turns, going up and down at set times. A newer road opened in 2001. Since then, the usual system is that uphill cars use the old road and downhill cars use the new road. Landslides and repair work have sometimes closed one road, and then traffic may run both ways on the other. Road rules can change, so check the current status with your hotel or the local authorities before you drive.

Driving tips

The mountain road has many tight bends, steep parts and few safe places to stop. Drive slowly and use a low gear on the way down. Watch for motorbikes, cyclists and monkeys on the road. Mist can make it hard to see, so turn on your lights. There is no petrol station on the hill, so fill up in Kuala Kubu Bharu. Try to arrive in daylight, because the road is dark and hard to drive at night. People who get car sick should take medicine before the climb.

No public transport

There is no regular bus to Fraser's Hill. The old bus service no longer runs. You can take a KTM Komuter train from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Kubu Bharu, but you still need a taxi or a booked car for the climb. Ride-hailing cars may not want to go up, and getting a ride back down can be hard. The easiest choice is to rent a car or book a driver for the whole trip. Some hotels can help arrange transport.
