Cool Climate and Town in Fraser's Hill

Part of the Fraser's Hill travel guide — see every topic in All Fraser's Hill Guides.

The small town at the top of Fraser's Hill is part of the reason to come. The air is cool and fresh, the streets are quiet, and old stone cottages with chimneys stand among gardens and pine trees. The centre is small enough to explore on foot in an hour or two, at a slow pace.

The cool climate

The town is about 1,500 metres above sea level. Daytime temperatures are often around 18 to 22 degrees, much cooler than Kuala Lumpur. Nights can feel cold, so bring a sweater or a light jacket. Mist often covers the hill in the morning and late afternoon, and rain showers are common, especially in the afternoon. Many people come just to rest in the cool air, read a book and walk slowly between the cottages. Days are calm, and the town goes quiet soon after dark.

Stone cottages and architecture

The town is known for its old cottages and bungalows built from grey stone, with red or black roofs, chimneys and fireplaces. Many have gardens with flowers and roses. They look very different from buildings in the lowlands, because they were built for a cool, wet climate. Some are now hotels or guesthouses, and others are private. Enjoy the buildings from the road, and do not walk into private gardens. Walking between them on a misty morning is one of the simple pleasures of the hill.

The clock tower area

A small stone clock tower stands at the main junction in the town centre. It is the best-known landmark on the hill and a popular photo spot. Around it you find a few shops, small restaurants, a market area and the post office. The golf course spreads out nearby, with open green lawns in the middle of the forest. From here, quiet roads loop around the town, past cottages and viewpoints. It is an easy place to start a short walk.

Food and staying the night

Food choices are limited. There are a few local restaurants and food stalls near the town centre, and some hotels serve set meals or Western dishes. Opening hours can be short, so eat early in the evening. Accommodation ranges from old bungalows to simple hotels and resorts. Weekdays are quiet and cheaper. Weekends and school holidays can be busy, so book ahead. Stay at least one night if you can, because the early morning mist and birds are the best part.
