Osaka Castle Park in Osaka

Part of the Osaka travel guide — see every topic in All Osaka Guides.

Osaka Castle Park is one of the largest parks in central Osaka. Wide stone walls and water-filled moats circle green lawns, trees and gardens. In the middle stands the white and green main tower, with a lookout at the top. Local people come here to jog, picnic and see the spring blossoms. This guide covers the moat walk, the tower view, the gardens and the best seasons.

The moat walk

Two rings of moats run around the castle grounds. The outer moat is full of water and has very tall walls of huge cut stones. A path runs along much of the outer edge. It is a popular route for runners, and a full loop takes about an hour at a slow walk. The best photo spots are on the south and west sides, where the tower rises above the walls and trees. In the early morning the water is calm and you can see reflections. Small sightseeing boats also run on the inner moat. They give a close view of the stone walls from the water.

The main tower and its view

The main tower you see today is a modern rebuild made of concrete in 1931. It was restored again in the 1990s. The outside looks traditional, with white walls, green roofs and gold details. Inside it is a museum with lifts. The top floor has an open-air lookout that circles the tower. From here you see the park, the moats and the high-rise towers of central Osaka. Lines for the lift can be long in spring and on weekends. Go early in the day for shorter lines. You can also enjoy the tower from the park for free.

Gardens and blossoms

Nishinomaru Garden is a wide lawn on the west side of the park, with a fine view of the tower. It is famous for about 600 cherry trees. There is an entry fee. The best cherry blossom time is usually late March to early April. The park also has a plum grove on the east side with more than 1,000 trees. They usually bloom from about February to early March, when the rest of the park is still bare. In autumn, the ginkgo and maple trees turn yellow and red, usually in November. The park is busy at blossom time, so come on a weekday morning.

Food, shops and getting there

Jo-Terrace Osaka is a modern building at the park entrance near Osakajokoen Station. It has cafes and restaurants. Inside the park, Miraiza Osakajo is an old stone building near the tower, now home to shops and a rooftop restaurant. The park is large, so wear comfortable shoes. The easiest station is Osakajokoen on the JR Osaka Loop Line. You can also use Tanimachi 4-chome or Morinomiya stations on the subway. The park grounds are open all day. The tower and the paid garden keep daytime hours, usually ending in the late afternoon or early evening. Check the hours before you go.
