Universal Studios Japan in Osaka
Part of the Osaka travel guide — see every topic in All Osaka Guides.
Universal Studios Japan, often called USJ, is a large theme park on the Osaka waterfront. It is one of the busiest theme parks in the world. Its biggest draw is Super Nintendo World, with Mario and Donkey Kong. This guide explains how to get there, how entry to the Nintendo area works, what an Express Pass does, and how to plan a day with fewer lines.
Getting to the park
The park is at Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line. From JR Osaka Station, take the Osaka Loop Line to Nishikujo and change to the Yumesaki Line. Some trains run straight through. The trip takes about 15 to 20 minutes. From the station, a short walk through Universal CityWalk, a street of shops and restaurants, takes you to the gate. Several hotels stand next to the station. Staying in one makes an early start easy. Many people arrive before the gate opens, so the trains get crowded in the morning. Leave early if you want the first rides.
Super Nintendo World
Super Nintendo World opened in 2021. You enter through a green pipe into a bright world of blocks, coins and moving platforms. The main ride is Mario Kart, a ride with headsets that adds game images to the real track. Yoshi's Adventure is a gentler ride for young children. A Donkey Kong Country area opened at the end of 2024, with a fast mine-cart coaster. You can buy a Power-Up Band, a wristband that lets you hit blocks and collect coins around the area. The area is small and very popular. Food and gift shops inside have long lines in the middle of the day.
Timed entry and Express Passes
On busy days you cannot walk into Super Nintendo World at any time. You need a free timed entry ticket from the official USJ app, which you get after you enter the park. These can run out early on busy days. Another way in is an Express Pass. This is an extra paid ticket that lets you skip the normal line on a set list of rides. Some Express Passes include a fixed entry time for the Nintendo area. Express Passes are sold in limited numbers and often sell out for weekends and holidays. Buy them online from the official website before your visit. Check what each pass includes before you pay.
Beating the crowds
The park is busiest on weekends, Japanese public holidays, school holidays in spring and summer, and around Halloween and Christmas. Tuesdays to Thursdays outside holidays are usually quieter. Check the park calendar online, because opening hours change from day to day. Arrive before opening time. Go to your most wanted ride first, then use the app to watch wait times. Lines are often shorter in the last hour before closing. Bring water and a hat in summer, because Osaka is hot and humid from July to September. In winter, lines for outdoor rides can be cold, so dress warmly.
