Shinsekai and Abeno Harukas in Osaka
Part of the Osaka travel guide — see every topic in All Osaka Guides.
Shinsekai and Abeno Harukas are next to each other in south Osaka, but they feel very different. Shinsekai is a retro district of bright signs, cheap food and the old Tsutenkaku tower. Abeno Harukas is a 300 m skyscraper with a glass observation deck. You can walk between them in about 15 minutes. This guide covers both, with tips on timing and getting there.
Shinsekai streets
Shinsekai means "new world". The district was built in 1912 as a modern leisure area, with a theme park and a tower. The theme park closed long ago, but the area kept its old, playful style. Today the streets are full of big shop signs, giant food models, old game halls and kushikatsu restaurants. It is a fun place for lunch or an early dinner. The main street runs straight toward Tsutenkaku tower. The nearest stations are Ebisucho and Dobutsuen-mae on the subway, and Shin-Imamiya on JR. Come in the late afternoon, eat, then see the signs light up at dusk.
Tsutenkaku tower
Tsutenkaku is the symbol of Shinsekai. The present tower is 108 m tall, and the main deck is at 91 m. It is not as high as newer towers, but the view over the low streets of south Osaka is close and lively. Above the main deck there is a small open-air roof deck. At night the tower is lit in colours. A long tube slide runs down the side of the tower to the basement, and a harness walk on the outside of the tower gives extra thrills. Each has its own ticket. All tickets now need a set entry time. Book online the day before, or pick a time at the counter.
Abeno Harukas
Abeno Harukas stands above Tennoji Station. It is 300 m tall, and it was the tallest building in Japan from 2014 to 2023. The observation deck, called Harukas 300, covers the 58th to 60th floors. Glass walls run from floor to ceiling, so you get a full view in every direction. On a clear day you can see across the whole city, out to Osaka Bay and the mountains. The building also has a large department store, a hotel and restaurants. The deck stays open into the evening, so many people come for sunset and the night view. Buy a ticket on the 16th floor.
Tennoji Park and timing
Between Shinsekai and Abeno Harukas lies Tennoji Park. Its front part, called Tennoshiba, is a wide lawn with cafes and a playground. It is a good place to rest between the two areas. The park also has a zoo. A good half-day plan is to start in Shinsekai for lunch, go up Tsutenkaku, walk through Tennoji Park, and then end at Abeno Harukas for sunset. The whole route is flat and easy to walk. Tennoji Station is a big hub for JR, the subway and Kintetsu trains, so getting back to Namba or Umeda is quick.
