Umeda Sky and Shopping in Osaka
Part of the Osaka travel guide — see every topic in All Osaka Guides.
Umeda is the business and shopping centre of north Osaka, around JR Osaka Station. It is full of modern towers, department stores and long underground shopping streets. It also has two good viewpoints: the open-air rooftop of the Umeda Sky Building and a red Ferris wheel on a shopping mall. This guide covers the views, the shopping and a new park next to the station.
Umeda Sky Building
The Umeda Sky Building is two 40-storey towers joined at the top by a ring-shaped deck. It is about a 10-minute walk northwest of Osaka Station, through a tunnel under the tracks. You ride a lift to the 35th floor and then a glass escalator that crosses the open space between the towers. At the top is the Kuchu Teien, or Floating Garden Observatory. The highest level is an open-air rooftop at about 173 m. You walk around it and see the city in every direction. Sunset and night are the most popular times. The deck closes in strong wind or heavy rain.
HEP Five Ferris wheel
HEP Five is a shopping mall near Hankyu Umeda Station. A large red Ferris wheel sticks out from its roof. The wheel is 75 m across, and its highest point is about 106 m above the street. One turn takes about 15 minutes. The cars are closed and air-conditioned, so the ride is comfortable in summer and winter. The view is lower than the towers, but you see the busy streets of Umeda up close. The mall below has fashion shops for young people, cafes and a games centre. Rides run until late evening, so it is a good way to end a day in Umeda.
Department stores and underground malls
Umeda has some of the biggest department stores in Japan, including Hankyu and Hanshin, plus large malls in and around the station. The basement food halls are great places to buy snacks, sweets and ready meals. Under the streets, a network of shopping passages links the stations and buildings. You can walk a long way without going outside, which helps on rainy or hot days. The network is large and easy to get lost in. Follow the yellow and blue signs to the station names. Grand Front Osaka, on the north side of the station, has many shops, restaurants and a showroom area.
Grand Green Osaka
Grand Green Osaka is a new park beside the north side of Osaka Station, on land that was once a freight yard. Most of the park opened in September 2024, and more buildings are still being added. It has wide lawns, trees, water features and modern glass buildings with cafes and shops. It is a quiet place to sit and rest after shopping. Children play in the shallow water areas in summer. The park is free and open to all. It also links on foot to the new underground platforms at Osaka Station, where some airport trains stop.
