The public hospital for Hoi An, on Tran Hung Dao a few hundred metres north of the Japanese Covered Bridge. It has about a hundred beds and was renamed a regional medical centre in 2022, though everyone still calls it Benh vien Hoi An. For a cut, a burn, a stomach bug, a drip or a set of stitches it is close and very cheap; for anything serious, the answer is the thirty kilometres north to Da Nang.
What it is known for
Being the only hospital in Hoi An. It is a district-level public facility of about a hundred beds on Tran Hung Dao, a few hundred metres from the Old Town, renamed from Hoi An Hospital to Hoi An Regional Medical Center in 2022 — a change almost nobody uses. It covers general medicine, minor surgery, obstetrics, a laboratory and an emergency room, and it deals with what a town of visitors and a farming hinterland produce: food poisoning, dehydration, infected cuts, fractures and a steady supply of scooter injuries off the beach road.
Who it suits
Anyone staying in Hoi An with a problem that is real but not life-threatening: stitches, a burn, a drip for a bad stomach, an X-ray for a suspected fracture, a night of observation. It is minutes from anywhere in the Old Town and costs very little. It is not the place for major trauma, a heart attack, a stroke, or anything needing intensive care — those belong in Da Nang, and the sooner that decision is made the better, because the transfer itself takes the better part of an hour.
Cost and insurance
State prices, which in a town where one hotel night can cost more than a hospital day is rather the point: a consultation, basic tests and dressings come to very little, paid at the cashier. Do not expect it to bill a foreign insurer — this is pay-and-claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and, if you can, an English-language medical certificate before you leave, because arranging one from another country afterwards is close to impossible. If you are then sent on to Da Nang, keep the Hoi An paperwork with you; the receiving hospital may not have any of it.
Getting there
At 04 Tran Hung Dao, a few hundred metres north of the Japanese Covered Bridge, so it is walkable from most of the Old Town and a short taxi ride from An Bang or Cua Dai. The published switchboard is +84 235 3861 364, and the hospital also advertises a 1900 9095 hotline. Say “benh vien Hoi An”; every driver knows it. Da Nang is thirty kilometres north, three quarters of an hour to an hour by road, and if the problem is serious that is the journey to start rather than to think about.
