The largest hospital in central Vietnam and the end of the referral line for the provinces around it: around 1,900 beds on Hai Phong street in the middle of the city, with specialists, intensive care and equipment that nothing else on this coast has. It is a state hospital, which means it is very cheap, permanently crowded, and runs in Vietnamese.
What it is known for
Depth. Da Nang Hospital is the city Department of Health’s tertiary hospital and the end of the referral line for central Vietnam and the Central Highlands, which is why it holds capabilities nothing else on this coast does: cardiac intervention, stroke treatment, neurosurgery, dialysis and transplantation among them. Its own published figure is around 1,900 beds, with well over two thousand actually in use, because it runs permanently over capacity. If you are seriously hurt or seriously ill anywhere near Da Nang, this is where the Vietnamese system will take you, and where the private hospitals send the cases they cannot handle.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need real care at a price they can pay, and anyone in a genuine emergency for whom the deciding question is which hospital has the specialist team on site tonight. It is not the place for a quick consultation in English: it is crowded, the queues are long, wards are shared, forms are in Vietnamese and English is limited. Take a Vietnamese speaker if you possibly can, or ask your hotel to send someone with you. For a minor problem you will be seen faster, and with far less friction, at Hoan My or Vinmec.
Cost and insurance
State prices, which for a foreigner paying cash are a small fraction of what the international hospital would bill for the same treatment — a consultation with basic tests and medicine typically costs less than a night in a mid-range hotel. Foreigners are charged more than Vietnamese patients covered by national health insurance, and you pay at the cashier as you go. Do not expect a state hospital to bill a foreign insurer: this is pay-and-claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English-language medical certificate before you leave — both are routine requests here, and both are very hard to obtain later.
Getting there
At 124 Hai Phong in Thach Thang, in the middle of the city and on the same street as Da Nang railway station, which is about seven hundred metres west. It is roughly a kilometre from the Han River bridge, two from the Dragon Bridge and four from the airport. Any Grab or Xanh SM driver knows it, and the emergency entrance is off the main road so a car can drive in. The switchboard is +84 236 3821 118.
