Da Nang’s dedicated obstetric and paediatric hospital, and the referral hospital for both across the region. It stands on Le Van Hien in Ngu Hanh Son, on the road running south past the Marble Mountains towards Hoi An, which puts it close to the southern beach hotels and a long way from the centre. It is a state hospital — cheap, busy and Vietnamese-speaking — but it is where the paediatric and obstetric specialists are.
What it is known for
Children and pregnancy, and being the hospital the rest of the region sends them to. Da Nang’s general hospitals treat adults; this is the state hospital given over to obstetrics, neonatology and paediatrics, and it takes referrals from across central Vietnam. That covers newborn and premature intensive care, complicated deliveries, and the paediatric emergencies a general emergency room is not set up for: a child with a fever that will not come down, a bad case of dengue, a serious asthma attack, something swallowed. Its published contact line runs around the clock.
Who it suits
Families. If you are travelling with a child who is genuinely unwell — not a scraped knee, but a fever that will not break, breathing trouble, a suspected dengue — this is the hospital with the paediatricians on site. It is also the place to go with any pregnancy problem while you are on this coast. An adult with the same illness should go to Da Nang Hospital or one of the private hospitals instead. If you are staying along the southern beach strip it is considerably closer than anything in the centre of the city.
Cost and insurance
State prices, so very low by Western standards even at the foreigner rate, and paid at the cashier as you go. Direct billing to a foreign insurer is not something to expect here. Keep every itemised receipt and ask for an English-language medical certificate before you leave, which matters more than usual with a child, because claims for a minor tend to need the full record rather than a summary. Families who want English-speaking staff, a private room and an insurer-facing bill generally go to Vinmec instead, and pay several times as much for it.
Getting there
At 402 Le Van Hien in Ngu Hanh Son, on the coastal road running south out of the city past the Marble Mountains towards Hoi An. It is about seven kilometres from the centre and from Da Nang Hospital, a few minutes inland from the southern end of the beach, and roughly twenty kilometres north of Hoi An.
