The teaching hospital of Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine and, by its own description, the first advanced tertiary university hospital in the north-east: roughly 1,460 beds, every specialty, and the place the hospitals of twenty provinces send the cases they cannot handle. It is a public hospital, so the prices are public too. The trade-off is crowds, long waits and paperwork mostly in Thai.
What it is known for
Being the last stop. Srinagarind is the teaching hospital of Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine and, by its own description, the first advanced tertiary university hospital in the north-east: the hospital the other hospitals of the region send the cases they cannot handle. With roughly 1,460 beds it is also the largest hospital in Isan. That means the full specialist range — neurosurgery, cancer treatment, complex surgery, intensive care for newborns — and a dedicated cardiac hospital next door, the faculty’s Queen Sirikit Heart Center of the Northeast. It opened in December 1983 on the university campus and has been growing ever since; a new surgical block with nine more operating theatres is the latest addition.
Who it suits
Anyone whose problem is beyond a general hospital: a rare diagnosis, complicated surgery, a premature baby, a cancer that needs a specialist team, a head injury. It is a public university hospital, so it is also where an uninsured traveller can get first-rate specialist care at Thai public prices — and where, if you fall seriously ill anywhere in the north-east, you are quite likely to be transferred. What it is not is a convenient walk-in clinic: the outpatient halls are crowded with referrals from across the region, waits are long, and most of the paperwork is in Thai. For a cold or a sprain go elsewhere, and let this hospital do what only it can.
Cost and insurance
Public university-hospital prices: higher than a district hospital, still a small fraction of any private bill for the same treatment. Foreigners pay at the cashier, in cash or by card, and insurers rarely direct-bill a public hospital, so expect to pay and claim; the hospital has a health-insurance office that can help with the forms. Ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before you leave — both are routine requests, but you have to make them. If you were transferred here by another hospital, keep that hospital’s paperwork as well; insurers ask for the whole chain.
Getting there
Inside the Khon Kaen University campus on the north-western edge of the city, entered from Mittraphap Road (Highway 2), about five kilometres from the centre; allow fifteen to twenty minutes by car, more in the evening rush. Grab and taxis know it well and songthaews run along Mittraphap Road, but the campus is large and the hospital sits on its own inside it, so ask the driver to take you to the hospital rather than to a university gate.
