If money is not the first question, this is where most visitors end up: the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services group’s hospital for Khon Kaen, on Maliwan Road on the western side of the city. Its emergency department is staffed by emergency physicians around the clock, its own description leads with heart care — a catheterisation laboratory and emergency angioplasty — and trauma care, and it is the hospital insurers and embassies reach for first.
What it is known for
The BDMS network’s hospital for Khon Kaen and the upper north-east, on Maliwan Road on the western side of the city. Its own description leads with heart care — CT coronary angiography, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory and emergency angioplasty — alongside trauma care and minimally invasive surgery, and it states that its emergency department is staffed by emergency physicians 24 hours a day. As elsewhere in Thailand, the Bangkok Hospital name is the one insurers and embassies reach for first, and the group can move a critically ill patient to its Bangkok flagships by road or air within its own system. For a visitor it is the hospital most likely to have an English-speaking coordinator on hand.
Who it suits
Travellers with insurance, anyone with chest pain or a serious injury who wants private-hospital speed, and long-stay residents who prefer one hospital for everything. Families passing through on the way to Udon Thani or the Lao border use it as the dependable private option on the Isan highway. It is not the cheapest hospital in town and does not pretend to be; if money is the first question, the two public hospitals cost a fraction. For a rare or highly specialised condition even Bangkok Hospital may refer you across town to Srinagarind, which holds the region’s deepest specialist bench.
Cost and insurance
Priced as a BDMS hospital, which is to say the top of the Khon Kaen market, though a little below the Bangkok flagships. Cashless direct billing is available to insurers the group has contracts with — most of the big international assistance companies — and usually only for an admission; outpatient visits are paid and claimed. Ring your insurer’s assistance line before you go if there is time, ask for a written estimate before any procedure, and keep the itemised receipt and the discharge summary, which every claim needs. A deposit is normal for anyone admitted without a guarantee of payment.
Getting there
On Maliwan Road (Highway 12), the highway that leaves the city westwards towards the airport, about ten minutes by car from the centre and on the way in from Khon Kaen Airport. Grab operates in Khon Kaen and is the simplest way to reach it; a songthaew along Maliwan Road passes the gate but is slow with an injury. In an emergency call +66 43 042 888 (or 1719 from a Thai phone) and ask for the hospital’s ambulance rather than driving yourself. Tell the driver “rong phayaban Krungthep Khon Kaen”; the building stands on the main road with its own forecourt, so any car can pull up at the door.
Details checked against the hospital’s own website, September 2026. Call before a non-urgent visit; in an emergency call 1669 or the hospital’s own emergency line above. Travel information, not medical advice.
