The private hospital in the middle of town: about 300 beds across three towers on Srichan Road, part of the Ramkhamhaeng Hospital group, open around the clock with an emergency and trauma centre and a full set of specialist clinics. It is where much of Khon Kaen’s middle class goes for everything, and its published list of contracted insurers includes the big international assistance companies.
What it is known for
The city’s big private hospital. Khon Kaen Ram opened in April 1995 as a joint venture between local doctors and business people and the Ramkhamhaeng Hospital group, and has grown to about 300 beds across three towers on Srichan Road, 200 metres from the City Gate. It is open around the clock with an emergency and trauma centre, a full set of specialist clinics and the group’s standard of private care, and its own factsheet counts it among more than twenty Ramkhamhaeng-network hospitals — which matters if you are later treated at Chiang Mai Ram or in Bangkok. It publishes a long roster of contracted Thai insurers and international assistance companies.
Who it suits
Visitors staying in the centre who want a private hospital with English at the desk and a short wait, families, and anyone with a moderate injury or illness that does not need a university hospital. It is a genuinely large hospital rather than a clinic, so it handles surgery, intensive care and childbirth, and it is where much of the city’s middle class goes for everything. Insured travellers with a serious emergency may still prefer Bangkok Hospital Khon Kaen for its international coordination; anyone with a rare condition ends up at Srinagarind either way.
Cost and insurance
Mid-to-upper private pricing — below Bangkok Hospital Khon Kaen, well above the public hospitals. The hospital publishes a list of contracted insurers that includes International SOS, Europ Assistance, April, Asian Assistance and Luma, so direct billing is realistic for an admission if your policy uses one of them; otherwise it is pay-and-claim, and a deposit is asked for on admission. There is an international customer desk (internationalcustomer@khonkaenram.com) for guarantees of payment. Ask for the estimate first, and for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate before you leave.
Getting there
On Srichan Road in the city centre, about 200 metres from the City Gate monument and a few minutes by songthaew or Grab from the railway station or Central Plaza; the hospital’s towers are visible from a long way off. Call +66 43 002 002 (or +66 43 239 000) for the emergency centre and an ambulance. Tell the driver “rong phayaban Khon Kaen Ram”; the entrance is on Srichan Road itself, so any taxi, Grab or songthaew along the road can drop you at the door.
