The big public hospital in the middle of town: a Ministry of Public Health regional hospital of around 1,200 beds on Srichan Road, every major department, and prices that for a foreigner paying cash are a fraction of a private bill. It is the hospital the province’s district hospitals refer to and, for an uninsured patient, the likeliest destination of a 1669 ambulance in the city. The trade-off is queues, crowded wards and paperwork in Thai.
What it is known for
Scale and reach. Khon Kaen Hospital is a regional hospital — rong phayaban sun, the top tier of the Ministry of Public Health’s own hospitals — with around 1,200 beds on Srichan Road in the city centre: the hospital the province’s district hospitals refer patients to, a teaching site for Khon Kaen University’s medical and nursing students, and for an uninsured patient the likeliest destination of a 1669 ambulance in the city. It has been here since 1951, runs every major department and has an emergency-medicine department large enough to keep its own website. It is the workhorse of public medicine in the north-east, as Srinagarind across town is its specialist peak.
Who it suits
Travellers without insurance who need serious care at a price they can pay, long-stay residents on Thai social security, and anyone in the centre for whom it is simply the nearest big hospital. It is Thai-first: queues are long, the wards are busy, forms are in Thai and English is limited to the emergency room and some of the doctors, so bring a Thai-speaking friend or a translation app. For a rare or highly specialised problem it can refer you to Srinagarind; for a quick English-language consultation you will be happier at Khon Kaen Ram, a few minutes along the same road.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices. Foreigners are charged more than Thai citizens but far less than any private hospital in town: an emergency visit with X-rays and medicine typically comes to less than a mid-range hotel night, and even surgery and a stay on a ward are affordable. Pay at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card. Insurers almost never direct-bill a Ministry hospital, so expect to pay and claim, and ask for an itemised receipt and an English medical certificate — routine here, but only if you ask. Bring your passport; you will be asked for it at registration.
Getting there
On Srichan Road in the city centre — the same road as Central Plaza — a short ride from the railway station and walkable from many central hotels. Songthaews along Srichan Road stop outside; Grab is easier with luggage or an injury. The switchboard is +66 43 009 900. Say “rong phayaban Khon Kaen” and every driver knows it; if you are not being admitted through the outpatient hall, ask for the “hong chuk choen”, the emergency room, which has its own entrance and never closes.
