A Ministry of Public Health community hospital of 90 beds in the market town of Thong Pha Phum, two and a half hours up Route 323 from Kanchanaburi. For anyone at the Hin Dat hot springs, on Khao Laem reservoir or up the mountain road to Pilok and E-Thong it is the only hospital within an hour or two; it treats what a district hospital can and sends the rest back down the road.
What it is known for
Being there. Thong Pha Phum Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s community hospital for a large, thinly populated forest district along the Myanmar border, upgraded to 90 beds in 2008. It is a general district hospital — an emergency room, general medicine, obstetrics, a laboratory and X-ray, staffed mostly by general doctors rather than a full roster of specialists — and it is the first port of call for road accidents on the twisting stretch of Route 323 between Sai Yok and Sangkhlaburi, for visitors to the hot springs and the reservoir, and for the mountain road to the old mining village of E-Thong, 70 kilometres and an hour and a half further up.
Who it suits
Anyone who falls ill or gets hurt in Thong Pha Phum district and needs a doctor now: a fever after a few days in the forest, a motorbike spill on the mountain road, a bad cut, dehydration, a child who needs seeing. It is a public hospital with public-hospital queues and Thai-language paperwork, and English is limited. For anything a district hospital cannot manage — serious trauma, surgery beyond the basics, an intensive-care case — it stabilises and refers to the provincial hospital in Kanchanaburi town, two and a half hours away by road; a private transfer to Synphaet is the alternative for the insured.
Cost and insurance
Public-hospital prices, and among the cheapest care on this page: an outpatient visit with basic tests and medicine costs a few hundred baht for a foreigner, an admission a little more. Pay at the cashier in cash; do not count on a card terminal or on any insurer direct-billing a district hospital — it is pay and claim. Ask for an itemised receipt and, if you can, a medical certificate in English; the certificate may well come in Thai, in which case have it translated in Bangkok for the claim. Keep every piece of paper from a transfer, including the ambulance receipt.
Getting there
In Thong Pha Phum town, just off Route 323 by the market — the address is Na Talat Road, “the road in front of the market” — 150 kilometres and about two and a half hours from Kanchanaburi town, 28 kilometres from the Hin Dat hot springs and 78 kilometres, over two hours of mountain road, short of Sangkhlaburi. Buses and minivans between Kanchanaburi and Sangkhlaburi stop in the town; from anywhere else out here you need a vehicle or 1669, whose ambulance comes from this hospital. Say “rong phayaban Thong Pha Phum”; everyone in town knows it.
