The Ministry of Public Health’s community hospital for Sangkhlaburi district, in the town itself a short ride from the Mon Bridge and the lakeside guesthouses. It is a small district hospital serving a remote border district and the only one within two hours in any direction; it handles the everyday and the urgent, and sends serious cases on the long road back to Kanchanaburi town.

Sangkhlaburi sits at the end of Route 323, 226 kilometres and four hours or more from Kanchanaburi town, with Thong Pha Phum’s hospital two hours back down the mountain road and the Myanmar border at Three Pagodas Pass 22 kilometres ahead. Sangkhlaburi Hospital is the Ministry of Public Health’s community hospital for that district: an emergency room, general clinics, a laboratory and basic imaging, serving a population that is largely Mon, Karen and Burmese as well as Thai, which shapes the languages you will hear at the desk. Anything beyond a district hospital is stabilised here and sent back down the road.
Who it suits
Anyone who gets ill or hurt in Sangkhlaburi — a fever after the boat trips and forest walks, a fall on the bridge steps, a motorbike spill on the lake roads, a bad stomach — and anyone crossing at Three Pagodas Pass who needs a doctor on the Thai side. It is a public district hospital: expect queues in the morning clinics, forms in Thai and limited English, though the staff are used to patients who do not speak Thai either. It is not a place for major surgery or serious trauma; those cases are stabilised and go by road ambulance to Kanchanaburi town, which takes four hours or more, or by private transfer to Bangkok for the insured.

In Sangkhlaburi town, in Nong Lu, under a kilometre from the Thai end of the Mon Bridge and a short ride from the lakeside guesthouses; Three Pagodas Pass is 22 kilometres and about twenty-five minutes away. Motorbike taxis and songthaews wait near the market, and any guesthouse will find a vehicle at night. Coming from Kanchanaburi it is the end of the bus and minivan route, 226 kilometres and four hours or more up Route 323 through Thong Pha Phum.
