A 74-bed private hospital on Saengchuto Road in Ban Tai, midway between the town centre and the Provincial Hall. Long the town’s locally run private hospital, it has been managed since August 2025 by PRINC, a listed Thai group that operates more than a dozen provincial private hospitals and is investing in its departments. It is the lower-priced private option for outpatient care and minor emergencies.
What it is known for
Everyday private medicine in the centre of town. Thanakarn is a 74-bed general hospital with departments of internal medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics and diagnostic radiology, and since August 2025 it has been managed by PRINC, the Principal Capital group, which runs private hospitals in more than a dozen Thai provinces and says it intends to bring the hospital up to its network standard. It is not trying to compete with Synphaet’s specialist clinics; it is the neighbourhood private hospital where local families and long-term residents go for routine care, and its prices reflect that. It has no website of its own — its Facebook page is the official channel.
Who it suits
Travellers on a budget who still want to be seen at a private hospital’s pace for a minor illness or injury — a stomach bug, an infected cut, a scooter graze, a fever that needs a blood test — and anyone staying in the centre of town for whom it is the nearest hospital. Some English is spoken, but do not count on fluent interpreters. It is not the place for major surgery or serious trauma: those cases go to Synphaet, if you are insured, or to Phaholpolpayuhasena, a few minutes down the same road.
Cost and insurance
The most affordable private option in town: below Synphaet, above the public hospital. Treatment is settled at the cashier before you leave, in cash or by card, and insurance is pay-and-claim for most visitors; ask at the desk whether your insurer is one it can bill directly, and expect a deposit if you are admitted. An itemised receipt and an English medical certificate are available on request for a later claim — ask for both before you go, as the paperwork otherwise comes in Thai. Directories list the hospital as open around the clock; ring first at night to be sure.
Getting there
On Saengchuto Road in Ban Tai, on the stretch between the town centre and the Provincial Hall, roughly five minutes by car from the railway station, seven from the Mae Nam Kwai Road guesthouses and eleven from the Bridge; Phaholpolpayuhasena is a few minutes further along the same road towards Bangkok. Songthaews along Saengchuto Road pass close by, and a tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi from the centre is a short ride.
